Her Subj. said:I am in very good shape and am looking to add bicycling to my repetoire
of running and weight training. I am also looking to join various
bicycling groups around Los Angeles. I don't have too much to spend
($500 or less), but I'd like a decent road bike not only for commuting
purposes, but also for distance bicycling.
This is a pretty limiting budget if you want a true road bike, rather
than a hybrid or mountain bike. You'll probably need to build up your
budget or get something used.
Quoted message said:I'm not sure if this is vital information, but I am female, 5'9" tall,
and around 135lbs. I visited a bike shop and the guy told me that I'm a
"medium" (whatever that may mean) and that I have a stand over height
ranging from 50-53. He didn't get into more specifics than that.
Probably means that 50-53cm would probably be the size of bike you'll be
looking for. Bikes are sized according to the length of their seat
tube, though there is no standard in how these are always measured.
Knowing the standover height is helpful. You'll usually want your
standover height to be a little shorter than your inseam length (maybe
1" or so).

taking any and all suggestions and opinions.
As just about everone will probably tell you, getting a good fit is far
more important than getting a bike in your favorite color or by any
particular manufacturer. (See list of good beginner bikes below)
I think you may be happier in the long run if you can find a way to
build up your budget to around $700 or so. At that price point, you
could get yourself a nice, new, entry-level road bike from a reputable
shop, instead of having to find something used that may or may not fit
you, and is in unknown condition. There's nothing wrong with shopping
online if you really know what you're doing, but it's probably not the
best way to get your first road bike.
Here are a few entry-level road bikes that you might come across. You
can (and should) visit each of these companies web sites to get more
info. Some of them offer womens bikes, which may or may not be
important to you:
Trek - 1000
Felt - F90
Bianchi -Brava
Raleigh - Sport
Cannondale - Sport Road 500
Giant - OCR3
