Whatever for? Sure, it was sunny, but my Buff is far more effective at
preventing sunburn than a helmet, as well as being more in keeping with
the pirate theme:

Of course, my sandals may not do much to prevent sunburn, but my feet
were creamed and were already nicely browned from a pretty good summer,

They should have done, but they really didn't stand a chance against
Jenny. Organisator Dave was quite embarrassed. He always saves a good
prize for the fancy dress, hoping it will encourage people to make an
effort. He told me later that his heart sank when he saw me walk up
with Jenny. If there's a cute kid in the line up, no-one else stands
much chance in the audience voting. Everyone there knows that Dave and
I are friends, and he couldn't help thinking it would look like a fix
when he ended up giving a set of clubs to my daughter.
