So, today riding home for lunch (normally I walk, but I had the bike with
me because I made some stops on the way to work this morning), I turned
too wide coming into a grassy area on my way, and hit a bad bump (or hole,
not sure which) a bit off beside the well-worn (and nicely smooth) path.
Not long after, I find myself on the ground in front of the bike with one
leg sore just below the knee and the other one sore just above the knee,
and conclude that I went over the handlebars and bounced my legs off of
them on the way.
So I make sure nothing is broken (nope, not even skin, but I'll be feeling
the bruises from the legs-on-handlebars for a while), then go back to
check up on the bike. Try to wheel it forward, and it turns out that one
of my front brake pads somehow got wedged under the rim of the wheel,
providing an extremely effective (though rather difficult to release)
brake, which I'm pretty sure was what put me over the bars.
Since I'm almost home, I just pick up the front end and carry it the
rest of the way, then I pry the brake out and check for further damage.
The wheel has a nice bend in it[1], quite possibly caused by the brake
pad getting stuck in there, and there's a few minor things that look a bit
misadjusted that I should get checked out when the wheel is getting dealt
with. But it looks like there's nothing serious that needs to be done
that wouldn't've needed doing soon anyways, so no real problems there.
But the engineer in me wants to know: What would have caused the brake
to get wedged in there in the first place? There's not enough pull
in the brake levers to force it that far, and I'm pretty sure there's
nothing that would've pushed it there before the bike went down, which
I'm quite sure didn't happen until after it was there.
Anybody know what might cause this sort of thing?

[1] This is actually a Good Thing; my old steel rims have been getting
slippery enough that the brakes haven't been working well for a while,
and I was planning to replace them in the spring, so this just gives
me an excuse to move that up a bit and have decent brakes for the
fall too.
In fact, the lack of confidence in the bike's handling that the lack
of good brakes has caused was probably the indirect cause of this -
I _know_ the bike can handle turning sharper than I took the corner
at that speed or faster, but I was a bit distracted going into the
turn, and didn't push it as hard as I should have (without having
to be aware of it) to make the corner.
So now when I get it back with brakes that work as well as they
should, I'll have an excuse to go find a parking lot and make some
nice sharp turns at speed (and some nice quick stops) to restore my
confidence in the bike's handling, and things should be better.
