Heart rate question(s) ....

  1. Hi all

    I went on my usual ride this morning but my legs felt like jelly after about
    30 minutes. I did a 100 km ride on the weekend and I suspect I haven't quite
    replaced all my spent energy.

    My avg heart rate on the weekend was 153 for the 100 km, avg speed 30.9 km/h
    (including stops for a flat, banana, wee etc.). This morning (38 km ride) my
    heart rate was 163 for an avg speed of 31.7 km/h. This is a few (4-5) beats
    higher than usual for the same distance, speed and wind, temp etc.

    I know this sounds like a pretty basic question but does your heart rate
    increase when your body is struggling to find energy? My perceived exertion
    was probably higher than usual.

    Also, how does the cold affect h.r.? I know when it's hot it goes up to help
    cool you down but what about the cold?

    PS anybody in bris notice that the have changed the sign along the
    coronation drive foot/bike path from "cyclists must dismount" to "cyclist
    must reduce speed". I suspect someone may have stacked it while trying to
    walk on cleats..

    I reckon you've figured it out already...

    If you're recovering from a big ride, make sure it's a recovery session,
    not a hard one 🙂

    If you're concerned, get into the habit of taking your resting HR in the
    mornings... if your resting HR is up by 5 bpm, you're entitled to sleep
    in. If it's up by 10 bpm, doc's orders are to stay in bed.

    Haven't ridden for a few days, but that's a crackup. Did everyone notice
    it was only a yellow "recommended" sign to start with... and hey, we
    take up less room ON the bike than walking next to it...

    Do you know what your max HR is? 153 bpm is a pretty high
    average for 100km (3 and a bit hours). Unless you're racing
    or training specifically, that would seem to be working
    rather a lot too hard!

    It can do, and it can refuse to too. Confused yet? 🙂 A symptom
    of a bonk is a lowered HR, as is a raised HR. "It depends".

    An increased heart rate can be a sign of over training.

    I've always hated/ignored the cyclist must dismount signs, they never ask motorists to get out of there cars.

    Heart rates are as follows
    MHR 198 bpm
    RHR 50 bpm
    Age 26

    My perceived exertion on the ride was probably only 7/10. I wasn't working
    all that hard.

    I use the formula % = (HR - RHR) / (MHR-RHR) rather than the old 220-age
    trick. By this, I was at around 70% of maximum.

    220-age doesn't give you any sort of training zones, it's a statistical
    guess, like my saying you're 178cm tall, because that's the average.
    There's some debate as to the worth of using "reserve heartrate"
    stuff (unrelated to your HRmax save for using it as a parameter). I'm
    yet to be convinced that it's a useful way to determine intensity zones
    for heartrate based training.

    If your HRmax is 198 (you've actually measured it?) then your
    E1-E3 zones are visable here :

    I generally recommend that most riders, unless doing something
    specific, stick mostly in E1, which for you, is around 128-148 bpm.

    You're currently riding in what's known as "no mans land", E2. E2
    is generally too hard to recover from quickly, but not hard enough to
    provoke adaptation to higher intensity. It's not
    often used by many coaches* but many recreational riders spend a lot of
    time in that zone, without realising that thay may find their
    training/riding more productive at a slightly lower intensity. YMMV,
    of course.

    * I use it to prepare riders for E3 and higher intensity work, but
    quite specifically, not randomly

    ticking. WIll take heed of the advice on sleeping, hr zones etc... another
    good excuse to stay in bed : P.

    Is it true that your rhr in the morning will be higher than at night due to
    adrenalin to help wake you up or is that BS?

    LOL Mine's very loud. I've learned to wake up BEFORE it goes off.
