That's probably what you want. As much as some of us are nostalgic for the days when the constant threat of grievous bodily harm kept many out of the city, NYC is in fact more deadly dull than deadly when it comes to violent crime these days. I can point you in the direction of some parts of Brooklyn which could maximize your chance of personal injury - a couple of our neighborhoods pretty well dominate the citywide crime blotter - but you'll have a tough time finding trouble anywhere you're likely to wander in Manhattan.

Before I moved here, I once overheard someone claiming that ones direction of travel around the reservoir depended on whether one lived on the Upper East Side or Upper West Side. Having lived in neither - I did once live downtown for three years, near the Italian restaurant past which Hoffman runs once or twice early on - I've never circled the reservoir and so cannot verify.

I usually go CCW on the resevoir when I'm there, seems that's the direction most people are going.
However, I'd recommend the bridle trail (a 2.5 mile loop if you go the long way) instead for a "dirt run", or the drives otherwise (6 miles)
The pond loop is very narrow, and the traffic there moves very slowly. I suppose if Steve is going at his recovery pace, it would be OK.
The one thing the pond has going for it is that it's a really beautiful place to run after sunset.
No one probably is going to attack strapping, running male. If you look vulnerable- e.g. way out of shape, wear goofy clothing, or carry an bulging wallet- then that may be another issue.
Will the fall colors be starting by then? Perhaps a tad bit early. Central park is gorgeous when the leave turn.
I strongly recommend doing some runs there. Its a pretty place and good people-watching spot. Tens of thousands jog there every day.

Birds defend their nests between May and July. Not an issue in September.

Run in beautiful western Pennsylvania. You don't have to worry about what's in your pockets.
Maybe not, but while Steve's English is obviously better than most Americans', I'm not so sure he's prepared to speak and understand Western Pennsylvaniese. Nor deal with the lack of running water, electricity, civilization, and literacy outside Pittsburgh and Erie.
