Hi Everyone, Just a quick warning to anyone going with a dog from Peter House Farm near Bassenthwaite towards Dash Falls on the bridleway. The first field has some very agressive cows (due to some small calves). I had Sweep on a very short lead and tried to creep past but they came rushing towards us. I did the reccomended thing and let him off. The pole waving and shout "Gerrrrah" at them seemed to work but it was not an experience I would like to have again!
We did get up to Great Calva in the sunshine though!

He does ignore cows completely from going to a field most evenings where the cows are so used to dogs they ignore them too! He doesn't even look at them....
When the cows are in a field that has the equivalent of a motorway for walkers running through it you don't expect to be attacked... I'm sure it's done on purpose by the farmer. The farmer would just love people climing into non-access land fields.... A good excuse to get the shotgun out!.... (Sort of joke!)
From the thread earlier this year it does prove that the technique of being /bigger/ and louder than the cows seems to work....and letting the dog off the lead to escape is much safer. (as per the DEFRA recommendatiions)

Yes it is done on purpose. The cows eat the grass.
Here's a thought. Stop buying British farm produce then all our farmers will go out of business and we can turn the countryside into the recreational facility it is clearly meant to be.

talking to my favourite hill farmer last week - can you have a favourite... lol - well I have...
anyway... he has been paid not to keep his sheep on the fells in Cumbria - well known farm / on many wainwright walks
he is gutted - as a tenant - the NT can tell him to move em... compensation doesnt cover more than a few seasons... apparently - they arent popular with walkers...

Did anyone see the episode of Dalziel and Pascoe the other night[1]? Where there was deliberate infecting of a farm in order to get compensation? I couldn't help wondering if any of that really happened. I mean, they must have got the storyline from somewhere...
[1] I think it was t'other night. I saw it at a friend's house where things are often recorded for later viewing, so for all I know it could have been a few days old.

If that implies that you've never bought a licence yourself to let her watch telly, surely its just possible that she won't let you watch on her licence 😉
