An irritation

  1. All my newer bikes have this "feature" on the
    front forks where there is a little lip on the
    dropouts. This means that the quick-release has
    to be loosened slightly to get the wheel out.
    After getting the bike in and out of the car
    a few times, this is starting to [censored] me off.
    Has anyone filed off these offending metal
    protuberances? Any predicted ill effects (besides
    the possibility of wheel popping out if skewer
    snaps while riding, which could happen even with
    the lip)?

    I once rode down Mt Barker Rd in Adelaide with only
    one nut on the front hub. Didn't realise until I'd
    got into the city and it was rattling a bit. No
    fancy lip on those drop-outs.

    I think they're called "lawyer lugs". I don't see any downsides to
    filing them off, except that you wouldn't be able to sue the
    manufacturer if you crash cause the wheel fell out when you popped a
    wheelie...

    I haven't yet filed them off my bike, but I bought a new file last week
    so I might go do it today. They [censored] me off no end...

    Yep, they are another innovation from the good ol' litigious US of A.

    There should be a clause somewhere that says that if you have an IQ greater than, say, 75, you can file 'em off.

    Oily fingers? Never! Hold the outside of the derailleur body to swing
    it rearwards and out of the way. Line the chain up with the outer
    sprocket and slot the wheel into place. Of course you need to have it
    set to the highest gear, but you already did that when you took the
    wheel off...

    There's more to it then that. "Apparently",with disk brakes if you are
    moving forward, when the calipers grip the disc the resultant force
    tends to pull the wheel downwards out of the forks. If you don't have
    disc brakes it probably won't be a problem.
    A similar situation arises if you have the new rear facing dropouts
    (like track bikes), apply the brake and the rear wheel will try to drag
    itself out of the dropouts. it doesn't happen on a track bike because
    you don't have brakes (not real ones anyway).

    i don't have a lip on the fork as you discribe, i have a better feature.

    when you undo the skewer, the loosen the nut on the other side from the
    lever, then loosen the cam for the brakes, then wiggle like crazy to get
    the tyre past the brakes =)

    i don't have to do this very often, and never have had a skewer undo
    itself, except when punted by some tw4t in a 'cruiser... the wheel was
    also bent =( but better now =)

    Maybe, if you don't tighten up the QR. Although I suspect that the
    weight transfer to the front wheel would counteract this this effect.

    Plus, Duncan's talking about his road bike so disk brakes are out.

    The back wheel is more of a pain than the GV bike, or is it the other
    way? Either way, I've only had to do it once each.

    Greetings,
    The `lip' in question are known in the trade as Lawyer Lugs. They were
    put there after US lawyers sued a few bike companies when front wheels
    fell out. My bike has them too.

    in front of the centre line of the stanchion/slider. Reversing the sliders
    will place it behind the stanchion, producing very undesirable and
    potentially dangerous steering geometry. Do NOT do this!

    Had to advise a local lad once about his bike's forks that had been reversed
    by whatever [censored] LBS or drop-kick friend had worked on his bike. Negative
    castor = instant steering reversal if you take the hands off the bars.

    Fork rake will mean that you'll usually still have some trail, but you're
    dead right, the bike will still get noticably twitchier. How about getting
    somebody suitably qualified with a TIG to move either the forks or caliper
    mounts around to the other side of the slides?

    Nonononnonooh!!! Am I correct in saying that most suspension fork sliders
    are cast, not in aluminium but in magnesium? If so, don't put a welder, TIG
    or otherwise, anywhere near them.

    Kabooom!

    Your safest procedure is to regualarly check your front QRs. Mine get
    retightened frequently when I have to put the bike in the car for transport
    up the bush.

    The pictures I was looking at showed the drop-out on this particular fork to
    be in the centre of the slider. I was suggesting from a manufacturing design
    point of view it would be better to have the caliper in front of the axle..

    Happy Birthday, all part of your cunning plan to get closer to standard
    time in the tt on sunday!

    When I bought the Orbea from Parkers, Dennis Lightfoot said to file the
    lugs down straight away. This was while I was placing the beast in the
    boot of the car.
    I figured it wouldn't be such a critical issue, just a few more seconds
    of your life spent with the bike, certainly beats being in a cade in a
    traffic jam on the Kwinana carpark.

    Having only one nut on the front hub would be painful, please tell us
    more.
