Well...I'm checking out of a while and hitting the road fellow runners. Gonna fly down to Atlanta and meet w/my mom where she is safe...then head down to Mississippi. Over the year I've mentioned and noted running in Waveland, MS along the Gulf Coast....a couple of times...in fact the day before Katrina hit I mentioned my head was not really into the 1/2M I raced here in NYC on Sunday due to my mom having to evacuate her home in Waveland, MS.
You see stuff on TV...the news...and you never connect it to you. Well...Waveland...my mom's coastal town was ground zero...the dead center and a direct hit from Katrina. Nothing is standing in this town....it's completely demolished...the whole town. Authorities could not even access the town for 3 days after the fact.....The three adjacent towns were Pass Christian/Waveland/Bay St. Louis....the direct center of Katrina's eye.
Duty calls and I am going to take care of my Mom this Fall...do a lot of travel between here in NYC, down to Mississippi...and out to California where my extended family resides and where my real home is. I figure I will just be running whenever I can....travel with a pair of NB 900's....etc. I'm going to try and always make it back to my NYC club races...and I will do the NYC Marathon.

My thoughts have been with your mother as I've read about this disaster. Glad she has you and you both have people elsewhere to help you through these times. Best of luck and keep in touch.

Hey be careful down there. I'll be down there as soon as I can get in as a help and not just adding to the burdon. My wife's mother fled the storm and is with us and we got the word that her Gulfport home had six feet of water and a tree crushed the roof. I've also got a sister with family and brother in law with family in Ocean Springs and Biloxi respectively. Don't know how much running I'll be doing, but need to try to help out.
Such a shame, Bay St. Louis was such a beautiful town and word is it is completely gone. My sister is a nurse and is stranded in Hancock medical center. She pulled a 48 hour shift and they are evacuating the hospital and have released her but last we heard she couldn't get home to Ocean Springs anyhow.
