  1. Hi

I'm planning to start Atkins soon and I've been going through 'Dr.
Atkins New Diet Revolution", "Dr. Atkins New Diet Cookbook", and
"Atkins for Life" (h/c). One thing I haven't been able to find are
suggestions for vitamin/mineral supplements specifically geared or
made to fit in with Atkin's or any low-carb program. I'm also
wondering what another supplement would be to keep my (shudder) bowels
functioning regularly during this time. Would something like FiberCon
    fit into this?

A good question. I take 4 of the Citrucel caplets *every* day to stay
regular. Personally, though, when I started LC I was not the norm. I
had the worst diarreah for like a month. I don't know if it's cause I
completely 180'd my body and it was rebelling or what, but most people
get constipated. Either way, the caplets work great for me.

Good job reading the books first 🙂 It's a great way to pave the road
    for a successful life change.

  3. Oh God, YES. Take your fiber caps, make sure to take EXTRA vitamin C as
    well as a heavy-duty multi vitamin/mineral combo. I didnt...and boy,
did I pay. (gum disease worsened dramatically) Now Im taking
    calcium/mag., C, B complex, fiber caps, a multi and CoQ-10....oh, and
    fish oil caps.

Ya just GOTTA. Also, make sure you're getting that BIG salad every
day---at least two full cups of mixed greens. During Induction, you dont
get bell peppers (vitamin C), onions, tomatoes, fruit or berries....so
    the vitamins are really crucial.

    Good luck--

Hi Louie, welcome to the group! As far as digestion goes, if you eat
enough vegetables, keeping things moving should not be a problem. If it
is, just about any fiber supplement will do (try to find one that does
not contain sugar, etc.). Be sure to drink lots of water with it.

Hi Nicole, Lass and Saffire -

Ok on the veggies; I'm wondering if there's some kind of brand name
vitamins sold specifically to go with this program? I'd have thought
Atkins would sell something like that since they make the breakfast
bars and shakes, but I couldn't see it on the website.

  6. I was in GNC the other day getting fish oil
(their double-strength fish oil caps are a
pretty good deal based on the claimed EPA
and DHA content) and decided to browse a bit.
I ran across all kinds of Atkins branded stuff
including vitamin packs. So, they do exist
and are available locally if you don't like
buying that kind of thing online.

Then you obviously haven't actually read 'Dr.Atkins New Diet Revolution,'
which devotes entire chapters and appendices to the subject. Read the book.

  9. Atkins has them but they are overpriced. Get a good generic multivitamin,
preferably without iron if you are a beef eater. I buy a Centrum Silver
    equivalent at Costco.

In the Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution Book there is a break down of what
vitamins are icluded in the Atkins Basic Suppliment formula. We can't buy
that here in Australia, so I took the list with me when shopping for a
multivitamin and simply read the labels on everything on the shelf until I
found one that was pretty close to identical and use that. I also take
odourless Omega 3 fishoil and Evening Primrose Oil.

As for a fibre suppliment, any of the usual fibre suppliments are OK as long
as they aren't sweetened or filled out with carb based ingredients.
Otherwise you can use powdered psyllium husks mixed into a glass of water or
with a protein shake (masks the texture better!).

  13. Yes, you should be able to buy any good brand of multi-vitamin supplement,
it doesn't have to be the Atkins brand. But be careful with psyllium as a
fibre supplement. It should be taken at a separate time from your
multi-vitamin since it inhibits the absorption of some minerals.

As others have pointed out ..... In 😄r. Atkins New Diet Revolution"
there is a chapter on nutritional suppliments.

Chapter 23: "Nutritional Suppliments : Don't Even Think Of Getting Along
    Without Them ! "

    And I may add,

"Don't Even Think of Telling People You've Read The Atkins Book, When
    You clearly Haven't"

Sounds like a common cheap student trick to avoid the hard work of
    actually reading.

Yeah, we old farts can spot that pretty quick.

    good luck with the diet.

hope you can find someone to read the books for you.

    Hi JBUCH -

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, you're right about that. I have started
reading the (NDR) book, but I'm quite aways from completeing it and at
this rate it's going to take several weeks to complete. I'm trying
to get organized before that time.

I'd had some some success following Jenny Craig's plan, but the
low-fat stuff would usually catch up with me and I'd go off the diet.
The part that I really liked JC's system is having the entrees already
prepared and only having to fill them out with veggies, yogurt, etc.
That's my weak point - organization. I need to have it setup before I
begin and that's my reason for posting the question(s). I would have
stumbled across that section eventually, but I really want to go
forward with this now. I've begun walking 3x weekly now, about 1.5 or
1.8 miles depending on where I go, and it feels good to be changing
(however slowly) from a sedentary lifestyle.

Atkin's is a good plan and I expect excellent results with it after
being 70 lbs overweight for some time.

  18. People here are VERY big on "read the BOOK". i guess they figure, if
THEY had to read it, YOU have to, too.

Frankly, the diet itself could have been said in five or six pages, but
    hey, that doesnt sell books.

Screw the damn books. They're boring. Go to atkins.com and read the
basic diet there-- click on INDUCTION to get started.

Nice of you to show basic honesty.

Here is a nutshell approach that I use to explain Atkins quickly.

    1) Eat until satisfied, NOT SATIATED --Atkins says this about nine
times in the book, so it must be important ......or ..... EAT LESS

    2) "Exercise : It's Non-negotiable" --- which is the title of Chapter 22
    in Atkins Book

    3) "Nutritional Suppliments: Don't Even Think of Getting Along Without
Them" which is the title of chapter 23 of the Atkins book.

    4) Use a Sensible Eating Plan ..... and for Atkins this is Low Carb,
moderate protein, higher fat. RTFM means to Read The F*****g Manual.
Helps you understand the eating plan....

    EAT LESS
    EXERCISE MORE
    TAKE VITAMINS
    SENSIBLE DIET (RTFM)

I've knocked off over 50 lbs and kept if off for over a year.

Published diet outcome statistics say less than 5% of dieters can do
that. In fact, the prognosis for weight loss for many people is pretty
brutally negative.... people managing to gain back all the weight they
lost.... AND MORE ... inside of two years.

How are you going to bet that negative picture?????
