my 10 mile riding commute is immersed in excavated sand with new used
aluminum chain rings, chain and cluster. I'm planning an enclosure-for
the chain.
But not today so I'm forced to clean the chain and gears every morning.
Twisted laterally, the chain crunchs sand after ten miles.
I am astounded that the chain shows no wear after 400 sandy miles, and
the CR seems to be holding steady.
I swirl the chain in thinner, rag dry, then crunch the chain laterally
then rinse again washing out crushed sand particles.
I'm using valvo synthetic transmission oil at a steady 90 degrees.
For a short time, the Valvo apparently holds most sand particles to the
surface where no extensive damage comes from a grit paste getting in
between the works.
In the beginning, i had thought the wear out was inevitable and
imminent but the daily cleaning and the hi weight chain lube forstalls
wear.
