So Nicole, have you just stopped eating this month?

I'm joking of course. Your progress on your last few pounds
to lose has been amazing. Keep it up.

Thanks JJ. Weird thing is I'm upping my carbs, too, so I can start
finding my maintenance level. I'm at 50 grams net now, and still
    losing. Love it!!

You are doing so great! I'm really happy for you.

I, OTOH, am doing abysmally. And I'm really discouraged.

See, I've tried various diets all my life (I'm 53) and always I could
lose weight, and always when I stopped 'dieting' I'd gain back all the
weight I lost, and then some.

What excited me so much about low-carbing was that it was a WOE. It was
only necessary to follow a few basic rules, and the weight just fell off.
Well, I'm still following the rules, but the weight is creeping back up
    again.

Believe me, I know what's wrong. I'm eating too much. Low-carb food is
still food, and must be eaten in moderation. The part that I find so
discouraging is that I had *hoped* that I wouldn't have to count calories
any more. Just keep track of the total carbs, keep it under <insert
number here> and voila! weight loss.

ARgh. I guess I'm going to have to go back to recording every friggin'
morsel that goes in, weighing everything, keeping track. The trouble is
that while I can do that for short periods, six to twelve months at a
time, I can't do it forever. I'm just not built that way.

    Damn, damn, damn.

Awwwww 🙁 Dont' be discouraged. It's not an easy road. I stopped
losing, and realized I had slipped into the thinking that I didn't
have to worry about calories. As it turns out, I have to watch those,
too. For the past 16 months, I've counted and weighed every morsel
that went into my mouth. I don't intend to start now. It's not always
easy. Sometimes it's a pain in the butt. It's necessary... at least
    for me.

    Keep at it!!

    Hugs,
    Nicole

I have been watching your posts, and your progress on Robo. This is the
first I recall your mentioning the calorie counting. I had recognized that
we both had the same kind of steady progress. I too try to weigh and record
every bit of food. I use the Fitday download. My only real source of
error, I think, is dining out.

    Bravo!

For a long time I wasn't concerned with the calories. Then I stopped
losing and had to figure out what was going on. Well, turns out my
calories were sneaking WAY up... it was the nuts. Well, I figured that
out and cut my calories down. Started losing again. I had also given
in to hot dogs... high calories, lots of salt. Convenience foods. I
cut that out, limited my cheese to NO more than 3 oz per day.. and
    viola! I lose again.

I watch you, too. You're an inspiration. Thank you. Glad we're on
    this journey together 🙂

    Congrats to us *both*!!

So what will you do when you have lost all the weight you want? Will you
continue to count calories? That's my nightmare. I know I can, for a
while, but I also know I'll stop someday and the weight will come back.

But you're right, of course. If I must count calories, then count
    calories I shall.

You really are in inspiration to me, you know.

I've been thinking ahead to when I reach my goal weight, and I'm not
going to necessarily *count* calories forever, but I am going to count
carbs, and avoid the "high calorie" foods. I don't ever want to go
    back.

Thank you for the compliment, btw. If I can inspire anyone, I'm happy.

So how are you doing this week? You were in the dumps a bit
    last week.

Stick with your diet, if only to help as best possible with
    the diabetes.

I can't help with the menopause, but I could use some advice
as to how to be considerate of my wife as she has begun the

I figure that you are in grad school by choice so you can't

This week school has started again, and I'm totally energized by it. My
menofog seems to have lifted, and understanding the rarefied concepts of
a 500-level math course is actually possible again. Yay!

    Quoted message said:

Actually, with low-carbing, I can keep my sugar under very good control
even if I gain weight. Low carbing *rocks* for diabetics.

I've decided to start recording everything again, and actively work at
losing again. Now that school is back in session, it will be easier,
since I won't have time to obsess about food. :-)

The most important thing is to recognize that her body, which she thought
she knew pretty well, has decided to pull the rug out from under her, and
the only sure thing is that nothing is sure. So if there are mood
swings, try not to take them personally. (Also be aware that rolling
your eyes or suggesting her anger is due to hormones is a game that makes
Russian Roulette seem sensible in comparison.)

And if she likes usenet, have her come on over to alt.support.menopause,
where there are a large number of mostly civilized women who can at least
sympathize, and probably help. Or you can come yourself, if you like.
We almost never castrate male visitors, at least not until they've shown
    too much insensitivity. ;-)

It isn't a bad thing to be in grad school, in fact, it's great, but it
does complicate things sometimes. (<-------- bigtime understatement)
