Its true that Portland is very much a biking town, mostly road biking.
They're everywhere around here. Its unusual if I don't pass at least three
on my drive home. I probably should ride to work (I used to when I worked
closer), but I hate doing that kind of thing in the morning. If only there
was a way to just ride back. ;-)

Road biking is still inherently dangerous, though. Even as much as
Vandeman grouses about the "dangers" of mountain biking, there are as many
people killed riding on the streets of this bike-friendly city than
mountain biking worldwide.

You want to see a place designed for biking, look at Holland - they have
separate STREETS (little mini-streets) just for bicycles. Bikes are
everywhere. At the central train station in Amsterdam, there is a
three-level parking garage - not for cars, but for bicycles!

Yeah, but the list of things you can do in Amsterdam is a bit shorter when
you're toting along a 15-year-old daughter.
