I would like to attempt a local triathlon next year. the link :

    Swim · 1 Kilometre, Bike · 32 Kilometres, Run · 8 Kilometres

I can swim 1 km relaxed at about 30 mins. I bike to and from work, each way
is about 20km, and that takes me about 1hr, not pushing it. I did the
running test for the Canadian military and can do 2.2km in about 12mins.

    A few things

    1) once the water is too cold, I plan to join the local YMCA, where the
indoor pool is and do lengths.

    2) I plan to continue to bike to work. I have been doing it since March
    2004.

    3) I plan to start jogging in the fall.

    Now for the questions...

    Swim --
    1) in a pool how long should the 1km take to be "respectable" I dont wantto
be at the end., nor do I care if i am in front.

20-25 minutes would be middle to back

    2) As it says, it is a spring fed lake. I have never swam with a wetsuit on.
where can I get an inexpencive wetsuit? I do not have a credit card, so
Checks or going and picking it up would be what I would do. Should I train
in a pool with a wet suit on, or should I leave that for the month before?

ProMotion are good value. Do some open water training in the wetsuit

    3) while I practice, does it matter what I wear? I normaly just wear a
    swiiming brief.

    No

    4) how often should I practice?

Depends how much time you have or want to commit. Most people find
they need to swim 2-3 times a week to get an improvement.

    Biking
    1) biking to/from work, how long should the 20km take so that it can become
    close to the respectable time?

40 minutes would be middle to back of pack. Leaders more like 30 mins.

    2) Should I get a road bike? would a 21 speed mountain bike be fast enough
on the straight and hilly stretches?

Depends how rich you are and how much you care about your finishing
time. Road bike will be a couple of kph quicker for no extra effort.
If you stay with MTB then buy some slicks.

    Running
    1) I do not usually run. Once I start how far should i be able to go, and
    how long should it take?

How long is a piece of string? I suggest you start with whatever you
can do that doesn't hurt too much and build up until you're comfortable
    running 8k.

    2) Since i will be running in the fall, winter and spring, What should I
    wear to train?

    Something warm

    Quoted message said:

    3) Where can i get tips or training ideas that will help me run better?

    Trinewbies.com

    4) When I was younger, I used to have ankle problems. Basically I would not
be able to support myself on my feet. What can I do to stengthen my ankles?

    Running.

    Quoted message said:

    5) How often should i run?

Given ankle problems - no more than every other day. Build up
frequency, volume and pace very slowly and make sure you're giving
ankles, shins, knees, etc plenty of time to recover and adapt.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Micheal
