    Two cautions:

    The life of people who followed their animals and lived almost
    exclusively off them (bison and caribou in North America,
    reindeer in northern Asia) began much more than 10k years ago.

    Recent evolutionary research (Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA)
    shows that human evolution through selection is much faster than
    previously expected. For example, virtually all the population of
    today's Europe derives from 10 or so males less than 20k years
    ago. 0.5% of the world's human population has as ancestor one
    male ca. 1000 years ago. Female ancestry scale seems to be a bit
    longer, but not much...
