What style of rider are you? Do you see yourself riding 20 miles in the drops or would you prefer a more upright position? Bike frames come in varying geometries, from a Time Trial to a beach cruiser to a recumbent.

What sort of cycling do you prefer? Long distance jaunts through the countryside, mountain climbing, crushed limestone bike paths, racing?

How much do you want to spend?

Any bike can be ridden for fitness and they can be ridden anywhere. By fitness, I'm guessing you aren't into racing nor do you need to have the lightest bike for climbing. I'm also going to guess you would prefer something more comfortable for the long haul yet still plenty fast.

Trek makes an FX series they say is a "fitness" bike. $360 to $1500

Their next step up is the 1000C series. Shorter chainstays, steeper head angle, getting more of the racer geometry. These are all alluminum bikes.

Lemond bikes makes the Big Sky; a road bike with a more upgright geometry. $730. There's also the Etape, more aggressive geometry for $570.

    Gary Fisher makes the Nirvana

Giant makes a line of "fitness" bikes.

Specialized has their Sequoia and Sirrus lines.

And there are dozens and dozens more. Could you be a bit more specific about your needs and your budget?

  3. Cheap bike? Ebay, just watch out for scammers.

  4. Check the $700 and under road bike thread for inexpensive road bikes. I also second checking ebay for deals on used bikes.

  5. I want a comfortable ride but i want a relatively fast bike as well. I would also like to spend 1000 or less if possible.

  6. What about the Cannondale sport road series. would they be good. How much would one of those run me?

It's very difficult to decide which bike is best for you simply by looking at the spec sheets for bikes. I would highly recommend that you go to the LBS (local bike shop) and have them show you what would be in your price range. Then you can test ride bikes and decide which ones fit you best. I'd go to all the LBSs in your area and test ride all of the bikes in your price range. Then if you have two bikes you are torn between, then maybe the spec sheets on the two can help make the decision. There are plenty of bikes at the $1000 and under range that you will enjoy. A few that come to mind are the Giant OCR1, Cdale R700, etc.

if you want to ride for fitness, then you need a bike which is heavy and hard work. A cheap hi-ten MTB with tractor tyres would be perfect and cost about 100.
