  1. Hi again,

I need some advice on breathing while I run. I know that sounds odd -
breathing is pretty natural. But I find that I'm not exhaling very much
when I run. I have to make myself breath o-u-t and then back in. It seems
to help me if I breath in through my nose and out through my mouth but after
a little bit I revert back to breathing very shallow again, and have to
    "remind" myself to breath....

Is that common among new runners? It's almost hard to breath deeply but I
do better when I make myself breath "correctly"...My heart rate is actually
just a tad slower, which makes sense since I'm getting the oxygen I need!
But it's a struggle to do it right.

Anyone else have this to deal with? Just curious...Thanks again, JJ

you might try breathing into your belly. just so you don't
feel silly, wear a loose t-shirt. instead of expanding your
chest like we mostly do, push out with your belly
on every breath. i tried this several times on
a treadmill with my HRM. my HR dropped
about 5 beats while i was breathing this way.
it didn't become a habit yet, but i'm working on it.

Thanks...I forgot about this. I have heard of "belly-breathing"...using
your diaphram (?) vs. your chest. I'll give that a try. I don't care what
I look like! ;-) I'm at home on my own treadmill so...

Thanks for the advice! I'll give it a try. JJ

How does it feel if you do two breaths out for every breath in?
    (out-out-in, out-out-in)?

(not saying you should generally run this way, just as a little
    experiment)

    From rec.running FAQ, part 4

    http://tinyurl.com/a23vs

"The runner who wishes to learn how to belly-breath should lie on the
floor and place one or more large books on his stomach. He should
concentrate on making the books rise when he breathes in and fall when
he exhales. As it takes about two months to learn to do the movement
whilst running fast, it is important to start practicing well before an
    important race."

You won't get enough air breathing in through your nose unless you're running
very slowly. Try and maintain a 3 steps in 3 steps out breathing rhythm.

It's just like sex JJ, in and out, in and out.
Seriously though, remember I told you about many here "overthinking"
their running? This IS such a case. Just run, and let the breathing do
the natural thing. There's no need to alter it, or even think about it
    at all.
Oh, and ALWAYS start out on the left foot to prevent injuries LOL

This is bassackwards. If you have a protuding belly at all, this'll
excerbate it. Just do stomach crunches.

Hi Phil...Thanks! I've seen those FAQ's and will go back to read them. But
thanks for pulling out this part for me. Much appreciated, JJ

I do - lots of them...but they don't help with my "holding" my breath whilst
    I run! ;-)

I've actually done the breath-in-for-so-many-strides and the same for
breathing out...usually 2 - 4 strides. And I have tried to breath out
longer than breathing in. It makes me feel like I'm out of breath
initially...it's hard to explain...But I'm not out of breath because I can
keep running and my heart rate won't go up quite so far (tiny difference but
consistent) if I can make myself take deeper breaths. I'll try it again and
    see how it feels. JJ
