Quoted message said:Hmm... Dorney Lake isn't it? Or something like that. IIRC you get to it
from somewhere around Dorney (Turn off near Dorney Court). I didn't
think it was an Eton College thing though.Apparently it is where the Olympic Rowing will be in 2012.
And I think it's finished. At least it was in a lot better shape when I
saw it several years ago (Took a wrong turn 🙂. The clubhouse had just
been finished & they were fishing for members I think. This is of course assuming it's a picture of Dorney Lake & someone
didn't just decide to build another rowing lake next to it...
[...]Yes, it is an Eton College thing, it's largely financed by royalties on
the gravel excavated during its construction. It isn't complete, when
it's done there will be a 70-metre wide return channel running parallel
to the main 140-metre wide channel. From the picture you can see where
work is proceeding on this.Eton wanted 1000 metres of the lake open for the millennium regatta. I
believe the whole project is to be completed next year. By the way, the
high-resolution satellite pictures of the area look to be quite recent,
taken in the last 18-months I'll say.Regards,
Nick.
Thanks, I'd wondered how old the Google images were. (Seems a pity
such key data isn't included or accessible. Or maybe it is?)
Here's a consolidated picture, combining GE aerial with a MemoryMap
section (OS 1:50k)
