  1. How does one bulk up the portion of the trap close to the neck? Have
tried all the standard exercises including shoulder shrugs and neck
exercises without much result. Any suggestions?
    Thanks! Gene

Yes, just stop being a pencilneck.

Helpful, isn't he? He thinks this is a political newsgroup and doesn't have
much to say about lifting. You may have tried upright rows, which hits the
traps well. It's not a safe exercise according to some, because of the way
it also hits the rotator cuff. Neck bridges (facing celing and facing floor)
are also good, but do these carefully. Some people also don't advocate them,
but ask any wrestler or martial artist and they'll agree that this is one of
the best. Using elastic bands tied to a stable post and hooked around your
head, you can pull against the band for resistance. It's also possible that
you are a pencilneck (have a longer neck than average). Shrugs are helpful
for building neck muscles, too, but personally, I've found they hit the neck
only when I'm using dumbbells of 90lbs or greater. Anything less doesn't
seem to affect my neck at all.

    Hang power snatches.

  5. Don't listen to any of these POSEURS. They like to make everything seem like
    it takes massive weights.

I do UPRIGHT ROWS with just the barbell. That is about 35 pounds of weight?
I do 50 reps at a time, or until I can hardly lift the bar. Very important
to do it slowly and not jerk the bar as it can hurt your shoulders, elbows,
and wrists if the bar is loosely held and/or jerked up and down.
