Seeing as I needed to get my cassette replaced anyway (didn't quite
change the chain in time, dammit) I went for >drumrolllllll< CHOICE 2!

Took me a while to find it 'cause I've never ridden to Richmond Station
so sort of guessed my way there. Hey, I had time to kill :-)

Eventually found the place locked bike up and walked in. Let's just say
that Abbotsford Cycles isn't a bicycle shop, it's a bicycle WORKshop
which just happens to sell stuff as well :-)

Anyway got to chatting, drooled over 14 speed Rholloff hub. Good for
100,000 MILES apparently. Mmmm, tempting. Do I really want to go with
hub gears? Don't know yet but the Rholloff is totally drool worthy.
Had a very nice chat about the Surly longhaul and fixie options.
Mentioned I needed a new cassette and could they fit me in.

No problem. Simon gave me two choices. I could sit and watch them
change my cassette or I could take one of the Surly's out for a test
spin.

GRIN!

So it was the Surly Longhaul Trucker frame with, oh I don't know,
WHEELS, big fat slicky ones and a weird set of bars, kind of like
doubled over bullhorns, a triple on the front a seven? derallieur on the
rear and a REAL bell! One that goes DRRRRRINGddrRRRRinngg instead of
the insipid TIiing that my stoopid thing does. Oh and mudguards.

It rode very nicely. It's a real nice ride, super stable at low speeds
and all in all felt real good. I'm going to get one. Once I convince
the CFO. Don't know what bits I'm going to have put on the frame but oh
yes, it will be mine!

I recently had a surly long haul trucker built up for my GF. There were som oddities with the bar/stem/spacer bizzo, but its a very nice bike for the $$$.

I had a custom tourer done, the frame was three times the price, and whilst Im very happy with the frame, if the surly was available at the time I may have made another decision.

These would probably be the butterfly/expedition bars like this I'm
guessing?

Some of my touring club friends use these type of bars, and they give a nice
'sprung' feel. You would generally need to fit a longer headstem to keep
your correct reach though.

I only had twenty minutes with it. Plenty of hand holding options which
is good and they did feel nice. Plenty space to put computers, lights
and stuff too :-)
