  1. Yesterday I pushed myself particularly hard and rode close to 30 miles in 75 minutes (mostly on hilly terrain). After that, I also had to cycle to work and back - which is a fair distance.
I winded up sleeping close to 10 hours and today I feel lethargic. I also seem to be walking slowly and am very irritable. I know I'll be O.K. tomorrow but today I feel washed out.
Anyone else feel like this after a hard riding session? This is the first time I ever felt so shattered the day after - no muscle pain or aches but a feeling of irritability and slight fatigue.

Yes, but more over when I get over heated. I find that the heat affects me more than anything on a 30-50 mile ride. The average for climbs here on a moderate ride is about 100 feet per mile and with the temperature in the 90's on the F. scale. It has been this way for 6 weeks or better with no end in sight and it is hard on an old man.
I have to go very early or very late to escape the heat and it is still warm then.
Maybe in another few weeks in will be better.

  3. I rode hard on saturday, got home, ate a gigantic burrito, and crashed for 10+ hours. No lethargy or irritability, though... or soreness, for that matter.
I heard in my anatomy and physiology class that irritability can be a sign of your body telling you something; in other words, you might be a grouch because your body is making you one.
The sleep you had the night after the ride seems like an indication that your body is repairing itself. So in a sense, this might justify the point I'm making -- which is that you're recuperating.

  4. I'm back to normal again and seem to have recuperated fully. The problem with me is I just ride hard. I'm always on the big chain ring pedaling furiously. This morning, coming back from work, it took me only 15 minutes to cycle from my place of work to the central clock in the center of town, across the cobbles. That was pretty fast.
Rather than do recovery rides I tend to just take days off if I feel I deserved time out.
The other day, though, I was truly irritable. Didn't want to talk to anyone or be bothered with anything but sleep has helped me better my mood.

  5. Dehydration causes almost all the grumpiness in my life after big or intense rides. You should be peeing clear every couple hours throughout any day. In my house, sleep and water are the keys to a happy home.
