Threading CO2 Cartridges

  1. The idea of threading non threaded, 12g, CO2 cartridges came to me the other day and I wanted to
    experiment. Before buying the die, I thought to ask if anyone has done this before and what their
    experience has been.

    What is the die size? Is there enought metal on the CO2 cartridges? How do you hold the cartridge in
    place while turning the die?

  2. Hmm... I doubt if there would be enough metal to cut threads. Maybe there is some kind of
    adapter available for a few bucks? It might even cost less than the die if you don't have a set
    of dies already.

    Anyway, if you try this, might I suggest experimenting on EMPTY cartridges.

  3. Just use the ultraflate, which accepts non-threaded cartridges.

    Bring a threaded one and a threaded receiver to a hardware store or a Home Depot / Lowes to find
    out. You may also be able to search the web.

    the bottom of the threads of a threaded one. This would mean that the cartridge would fall right in
    to a proper die.

    This is a guess based on the fact that my inflator can take both types. I've never bought anything
    other than Big Air threaded cartridges.

    Put the die in a vise, and turn the cartridge. Or even put the cartridge in a vise.

    and simpler.

    Yeah I use unthreaded cartridges with my (threaded) ultraflate, so threading the smooth ones can't
    possibly work unless you have some kind of adapter to step the size up.

    I don't know how it would be simpler exactly. The only reason it would be smaller is becuase you
    can't store the CO2 cartriges in the inflator. However, there is a much better workaround for that
    than trying to cut threads on the cartriges. All you do is ream out a hole in the bottom of the
    inflator large enough for the tip of the C02 to stick out. This allows you to store cartriges in the
    inflator upside-down. That would be alot easier, and a one-time fix IMO.

  10. Forgive me for asking, but If you are willing to go out and BUY a die to thread the cartridges, why
    not just take that money and buy a inflator that takes non-threaded CO2?

    In my life time is money, the time it took you to post this question, and the time it will take to
    find the proper die then the time you will spend threading (if it will even work) would more would
    much more to me than $10 for a new inflator.

    But if you cant find the die, you might considder going out and learning blacksmithing, then build
    your own forge, mine a little ore, and knock out your own custom die, hell, even thing about making
    one for me.

    By the way, are you the same guy tht was posting in Alt.Rec.Dairy on care and upkeep of a cow
    because you need cream for your coffee in the morning

    I think you didn't read the previous messages...the purported need for storage was regarding
    threadless cartridges. The link above uses threaded cartridges, rendering this whole message thread
    not applicable.

    With threaded cartridges, there would be no need to store cartridges in the cartridge-holder.

    You might want to consider that the cartridge might blow up in your face because, in threading the
    cartridge you have reduced the wall thickness an unsafe amount. I am speculating here about the wall
    thickness, but performing a machining (threading) operation on a pressurized cylinder in and of
    itself is unsafe. It's not worth the risk.

    I already have 3 inflators for unthreaded cartridges. I also have a 1" tube of metal that screws
    onto the valve and then the cartridge screws in and the tire is inflated. It is a simpler and
    better system.

  16. Tell the idiots to shut up. You can do it. First find the right die size and get the corresponding tap. Take Zefal's or Superflate's or whatever company's threaded model to Home Depot to measure the threads. If they can't help you go to the Yellow Pages and look up some machinists in your area. They shoud be able to measure the thread size if they are competent. Then just buy the tap.

    You want to test it on some empty cartridges first. And once you've got that down, don't worry about it blowing up in your face as has been suggested here. The worst that could happen is that if when you make your threads, if the thread is too deep then the cartridge would be punctured and the air released and you're out one cartridge. Puncturing the cartridge is the same mechanism by which you inflate your tire using a CO2 cartridge anyway.

    So, don't listen to the haters.

    I have a frame pump on each bicycle. A Zefal HPX. CO2 is pretty great when it is 100+ degrees

    So then all you gotta do is have a local machine shop machine your own chuck (instead of buying one) and screw that onto a cartridge that you've threaded. Ahh, that ought to pipe down those hateful idiots. :p
