I have a Silca pista floor pump and have trouble getting the pressure gauge to work properly. The pressure does not usually register properly when the pump is on the tube valve stem. The pressure reading increases to what I think is the correct pressure when I pump down but as soon as that stroke is finished the needle (in the pressure gauge) quickly drops back to zero.
The pump is only a couple of months old and I've checked the non-return valve as the instructions suggest but it was fine. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

You have a leak in the hose between the gauge and the valve stem on the tube. The valve in the stem should close while the gauge displays the highest pressure that the hose reached. Meanwhile the tire valve is closed. If your hose leaks you will get the effect you are observing.

That indicates a leak. Try some soapy water, applied by the assistant, while you pump. Check the barrel to base and each bronze connection.

Another possibility is that the rubber insert in the head could be worn letting air escape between it and the valve stem. Those are easily replaced on a silca head.

Speaking of rubber inserts, I once did a stupid thing of installing one upside down in the brass chuck. Just wouldn't hold air no matter how hard I pumped. Installed the rubber correctly and the pump was fine. -tom
I should be able to test that by removing the Presta head and using the Schrader connection (on another valve!). If it doesn't leak then the problem must be in the head/insert etc. Thanks.

You can quickly check if your leak is around the chuck by attaching it to a valve stem (I assume we're talking Presta) with the stem nut tightened. Dip the chuck in a pan of water and pump. You don't even need an assistant. ;-)
