  1. I got a new O2 phone a couple of weeks ago and was thinking of creating
a BR film. last night, with a break in study for a couple of weeks I put
some sewing skills to use and re-sewed a pocket on a polo shirt to hold
the camera at just the right angle and with the lens just above pocket
height. Tested it out walking around the house and everything looked
great. Then I did a test run on the bike today. The problem with a polo
shirt is it has a lot of stretch, so when I lean forward on the bike
(and this was only on the MTB, will be worse on roadie) the weight of
the phone stretches the pocket and I get great footage of my bike and
the bars but nothing in front. Anyoe got any suggestions? I really want
to keep it attached to my body if possible, if it falls and breaks I'll
have a lot of explaining to do.

You're dreamin' if you think I'm gaffa taping a $1500 "phone" to my
helmet. Now go and eat something, all that weight loss is affecting your
    brain.

Why the heck not? Tape comes off with some alcohol. Heck put it in a
protective baggie, but be sure the plastic is nicely stretched across the
    lens.

Don't -tell- me you're worried that you'll break the phone if you have a
face plant, lol. (Note that a helmet mount is an extremely common way to
    mount a camera.)

Otherwise, maybe make some kind of a medium thin wedge out of styrofoam to
tilt the camera up a bit in your pocket.

Now that's the kind of thinking I'm looking for.

Think pendulum. Get a small map case from one of the outdoor/bushwalking shops, eg Mountain Designs. Shorten it to hang around your neck without much spare strap. Allow it to dangle vertically when you want to ride and take photo. Wear a strap around your chest outside your shirt/jersey (either elastic or with a bit of elastic in the loop. When you want to keep the camera restrained so it doesn't fly all over the place, tuck the map case inside the strap around your chest.

If quality of photo through the map case is crappy, you may need to cut a hole for the lense.

  7. How about a band of elastic around your chest?

myself and some friends always go to Marysville for New Years and we do, heaps of MTB, and I have always wanted to film my solo rides and our group rides, including night rides.

while in Singapore this year I picked up a Jazzy colour wireless video device (cost like $200 AUS), which can connect to my S-VHS(light enough for MTB), the camera came with a 9V battery adapter, the last thing I have to get is a power source for the wireless receiver of the signal, once I have that, I am set, this year is going to be the year!! The camera will be strapped firmly to the helmet or handlebar not sure yet, while require some testing, SVHS in camelbak along with wireless receiver!

if its anygood you would be welcome to use that setup, once I get it going, so dont hold your breath.

yep I was thinking that would be a bit uncomfortable, then realised I'll
be wearing one anyway with the HRM. Stay tuned BR guys, if the weather
is fine Sunday, god knows what I'll be wearing. My wife's got a lot of
sewing offcuts, might have to some up with soemthign interesting.

I've done a bit of experimenting here both on the bike and the
snowboard. Helmet Cam is the way to go if you ask me. I fixed my camera
via its tripod hole with a bolt though a hole in an old skateboard
helmet. I've tried a C-Clamp tripod fixed to the stem, but there was
too much road vibration. A Helmet Cam lets you aim it, and takes out
    most of the road vibration.

    Sounds like a brilliant idea.

I want to go touring there in a month, since I haven't been there at
all since I was 8, yet it looks like my GV bike IS A PEICE OF [censored].
AHEM. Fortunately the club has a bike for loan, which I plan to
steal. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a front rack.

GPL you couldn't pick a better hill. (Last week it had snow on it)
Mt William ITT... Just beware of the herds of Deer, Wallabies and Roos that
can appear out of nowhere as well as Tourists in cars and campervans whose
drivers tend to be more focused on the scenery than the road, especially
when you are on the way down. Last year, in October (ATBIAD weekend), when
I rode up that one fairly early in the morning it was pretty quiet no cars
on the way up, just deer, and four cars on the way down. Two of those cars
were on the wrong side of the road so be very careful on the way back to the
bottom. It had taken me longer than anticipated to get from Stawell to the
foot of the climb and because I was on a schedule that day I only had time
to climb as far as the carpark. I ran out of time to do the last very steep
2km to the top. Take with you an extra layer of windproof clothing and put
it on before descending. It gets very cold!!!

And lastly enjoy this very psychologically demanding hill - it plays with
    your mind.
Something you will notice is the silence of your surrounds. The only sounds
you hear on the way up are your bike and your breathing - well I probably
could have heard more if it were not for the sound of my breathing drowning
    out everything else.

    Dave,
Which O2 phone? I've recently been trialling the iMate PDA2K EVDO (O2 XDA2)
and currently trialling an iMate Jam (O2 Mini). The PDA2K has a much better
video mode than the Jam but it's so big you wouldn't want to carry it around
for fun. I took some video with it of bikes in action at DISC a few weeks
ago and was reasonably impressed with the quality however it's nowhere near
what you would get from a dedicated DV camera.

It's the XDA IIs and I've been pretty impressed with the video on it. My
test run on the bike was excellent quality, it only drops down in
quality when there's not enough light.

cheers for the tips, but I wiped out.. sticking to the comfort of flatness
for once.. I think Horsham to Halls Gap via Laharum/Zumstiens looks like a
nice ride.. but I just don't get up that way much to scope it out..

haha I took on-bike footage with my G3 (not the smallest compact digicam..). All I did was tie a knot in the strap so the camera was higher. The strangulation also helped slow the riding down thereby reducing the risk to the electronics..

When in doubt.. use some electrical tape and tape it to your most hairy nipple.. trust me.. it wont hurt at all ripping that off..

Use safety pins to remove the "sag" from your shirt.

Mount it to your helmet instead.
