  1. I have just completed my "Lands End to Dover" ride that some of you may
remember me planning way back near Easter time. The weather was fantastic
and I intend to learn how to put a website together to make the inevitable
    "tribute to myself" type thingy.

Whilst I am very relieved to have completed it (basically in 5 days), day 2
was the most physical, dreadfully punishing day of my life and had I known
then what I know now etc etc.

However, I would now love to see (and show others so that they stand some
chance of understanding) what THAT day actually entailed. If any of you have
"Memory map" or "Tracklogs" for Callington (in Cornwall) to Seaton (in
Devon), I'd be really really grateful if you could send me the profile of my
route in a "Word" document. (I'd buy it myself but have no other use for it
living as I do up here in Leicestershire

If you are able to profile me the route, the journey was thus:

Kelly Bray (just a few miles north of Callington) round Kit Hill via B3257,
joining A390 and on into Gunnislake.

Out of Gunnislake the A390 snakes to start with. However there are2 cut
throughs that local traffic takes. I took the first cut thru and then
re-joined the 390 to wind my way to the top.

    Stay on A390 into Tavistock

Out of Tavistock on B3357 straight up over Dartmoor. Turn left at Two
    Bridges taking B3212 to Moretonhampstead.

Stay on this road into Exeter

In Exeter take B3183 and make way towards jnctn 30 of M5. Then take A3052
virtually to Colyford, turning down into Seaford via Seaton Down Hill (of
the 3 majorish roads into seaton, it's the middle one.

As that's quite a long journey (can't believe we did it in one day with
panniers!), perhaps the route could be split across 2 pages with the divide
    at Exeter?

    Thankyou

    JB

At a guess, the profile is something like this:

    /\ /\ / (repeat for
    / \ / \ / every estuary
    / \ / \ / crossing until
    / \ / \ / knackered)
    / \ / \ /
    / \ / \ /
    / \/ \/

    :-)

    cheers,
    clive

  3. My email - should you be able to make the profile is (and without any spaces
or the word DOT of course)

In a straight line? What was the route? That can make a huge difference to
the profile, even a few dozen yards can make a significant difference in
    that part of the world.

I've done it for you in MemoryMap, using 1:50k mapping.

    Kelly Bray to Seaton:

    Total distance: 65.7 Mi
    Total ascent: 7253 ft
    Total descent: 7875 ft

I have the route saved, and will email you the details in a .txt file
(sorry, I don't have Word installed).

Although I have MemoryMap, I don't actually use it all that often and
am not too familiar with it, so I'm not positive that what I'm sending
you is exactly what you want.

It's the list of the route waypoints, giving cumulative mileage,
position and point elevation at each one. I've used lots of waypoints
to try and make the route details as accurate as possible. If you need
something else, then just let me know and I'll try and figure out how
    to do it.

    Oh, yes.

Well I sent the first one to the email address shown in your "from"
field, but I see that's just bounced back to me.

You might want to do something about that.

Anyway, second one sent to you at BTinternet. Shout up if it doesn't

I did it as far as Exeter. I'm not sure if the profile is actually any
use - if you do it to true scale, it looks like a flat line (they all
do) and if you set it to any other scale, it's impossible to imagine the
hills anyway. Having said that, the auto-scaled profile is at
    http://flat222.org/keith/profile.JPG

If it's any use, I make the stretch to Exeter 45.7 miles, with 5498 ft
total ascent and 5993 ft descent. Damned impressive.

(of course, I wasn't as careful as I could be, so Your Mileage May Vary

Hmm, it's occurred to me that you want the graphical image of the
route profile, not the elevation details in text format.

I'm afraid I don't know how to get that for you. I can print it here,
obviously, but that's not a lot of use to you. Besides, I'm not
terribly impressed by the MemoryMap graphic profile thingy, you can
make a route seem as impressive or flat as you like by altering the
scale to suit. At true scale any route looks as flat as a pancake.

If you know what scale you want it at, and can tell me how I might get
that image out of MemMap and into Word, I'll install Word and email
    you the document.

thats because MM doesnt let you put a scale of your own choosing in which is
a great pity (you get a choice of 3 IIRC, 2 of which are no use unless you
are cycling up mount everest). What I did, when I produced the profiles of

That's the easy way up. I call the second cut-through the "relentless

    fair old hill either way.

Next time, cut through Horsebridge, Chipshop(!) and Mill Hill instead.
It's more hilly, but *much* quieter and more scenic.
