Do you mean too late to start training, or too late to register?

If you mean too late to register, I believe that the race is closed.
There may be ways of getting into the race, but I am not aware of them.
Maybe someone else can answer that.

If you mean too late to start training, that is very difficult to give
you a good answer without knowing a lot more about you. Have you ever
run a marathon? How long have you been consistantly running? How many
miles per week have you been running? Do you have any other racing
experience? What are your recent times in the 10K, half marathon, etc.?
Any information about your running history may be helpful.

The NYCM is 12 weeks away. There are marathon training plans that are
12 weeks long. However, I personally would not recommend a 12 week
plan, *unless* you've already built up a good weekly base and have
consistently run several long runs in the 17+ mile range. On the NYCM
web site there is some good information on training.

Even if you could get in this year, I wouldn't recommend it. Shoot for
2006 as a long range goal. Use an 18 to 24 week marathon training plan
to get you there in the best possible condition.

    http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/appolicy.php says the
deadline for international lottery entrants was 1 May, so you are too
late. Some tour operators have a number of guaranteed NYCM entries to
offer as part of a marathon travel package; but the website says that
you may only purchase this from an operator in your country, and
http://tinyurl.com/bgxrs shows no vendors in Poland.

So it seems you'll need to apply for the 2006 NYCM via lottery, which
gives you some chance (I don't know how much - 50%? 20%?) of being
selected to run the race. Or if you are a fairly fast marathoner (2:50
if age < 40, 3:05/3:20/3:35 for ages 40/50/60) your entry will
apparently be guaranteed - this section doesn't distinguish between
international entrants and Americans, so presumably it applies to
    anyone.

Make sure you apply early in 2006!

You can also qualify off a half marathon and the times are a fair bit
    easier to achieve - 1:21 <40, 1:28/1:36/1:43 for 40/50/60.

I think they also have qualifying times based on half marathons, these are
easier than the marathon standards. I can't remember what they were, but
not very fast (over 1:20 for open class men)

Yeah, I left that off because [a] I had already included the link, and
[b] the HM standards seem unreasonably easy, I mean even *I* figure to
be able to run 1:28 HM easily at age 40. Would I really want to run a
marathon which gave *me* a merit-based guaranteed entry?

when are you turning 40? FYI, biggest 1/2 w/nyrr is Grete's Gallop.
Last year 18 runners in the 40-44 yr group cut sub 1:28 and I was not
one of them, that's for sure.

When you aiming to break 1:30 CP? Stat, Man? Grete?CP....raced a
    Marathon?

  10. Quoted message said:

18 Sep 2007. And when do you get your AARP card?

    Quoted message said:

    FYI, biggest 1/2 w/nyrr is Grete's Gallop.

Yeah, and you and Stumpus talked me into signing up for it this year
after all. It's five weeks out from NYCM and perhaps safer to run
all-out for a PR than SI only three weeks prior. So that gives me 3
halves (and a mile race) before the whole.

    Quoted message said:

Yeah well now that you're training like a non-knucklehead, you ought
    to. :-)

    Quoted message said:

Yup, Grete. You wanna put a bottle of wine on it? I haven't started
speedwork yet nor lost the couple pounds I figured on by now, so your
    odds aren't looking too shabby.

    Quoted message said:

    CP....raced a Marathon?

Ran a marathon, which I had intended to race. With an injured
hamstring, without running a step for the prior 2 weeks (see injured
hamstring) nor cross-training. Adding to that idiocy, I was
underdressed in short splits and singlet for a fiercely windy
waterfront course in about 48 degere weather, which combined with the
slow pace I could muster never allowed me to warm up. That sounds
wussy but feels horrible after a few hours, not just the legs but my
damn arms ached pretty badly from the cold and stiffness.

It was a really bad idea - I felt compelled to run it having backed out
of the same race the year prior, injured - and an unmitigated disaster
of a race. I shan't repeat most of last year's mistakes any time soon.

don't want to bet against you & glad to see the winning/determined
psychology. yes i think that marathon goal is a very tall order but
would love to see you do it. what's your BQ time? 3:15 or so?

  13. Quoted message said:

yes i think that marathon goal is a very tall order but would

    35-39 Men BQ = 3:15

What marathon goal of mine is a tall order?

  14. 3.0x for you is a tall order cp. if you doubt me ask donnie. i think
his 1/2 time was 1:17 heading into nyc last year. he went sub 3:00 by
    a whisker if i recall....hence donnie experienced 2 X his 1/2 + 23, 24,
minutes. simply some perspective & context to consider.

noting your 1/2 time is 1:33 or so right? okay, let's assume and even
grant you a 1:30 1/2 in Oct.....it's going to be a very tall order for
    you to go 2 X 1/2 + 9 min or under at nyc. that's a tall order for a
nyc first timer who just weeks before cut his first sub 1:30 1/2.

if the weather repeats itself as it did the last 2 years (65-70F)...no
way. another person who will tell you yours is a tall order is Brian
    B. in Texas....he posts on here all the time, knows the NYC course, and
runs a bit faster than you...but you, me, and Brian are all in the same
    general class of runner.

btw, you got your BQ time wrong i believe. you're 37 cp? i believe
the way Q time works is 3:15 is the first teir for the 35 yr old. and
then for every year over 35, you're granted 1 minute over the initial
teir (or in your case 3:15). Hence you are granted 2 minutes so if
you are 37, your BQ = 3:17 Min.

If it's 68-70F & sunny again....you're going to need those extra
    minutes cp, believe me.

  15. <[email hidden]> wrote in message

    <snip>

Where are you getting this information from ? There's no additional
allowance within the age group to my knowledge.

    From the Boston site:
*An additional 59 seconds will be accepted for each age group time standard.
For example, a net time of 3:50:59 will be accepted for a 42-year old woman.

If he's in the 35-39 group he can qualify with 3:15:59.
The other thing to note is your qualifying time is based on your age on race
    day.
I ran a qualifier of 3:27 a month before my 45th BD but it was good for a BQ
as was going to be 45 by race day.
I would agree that 3:0x is a lofty goal on any course given current times
and lack of experience in racing marathons.

[censored] I thought the 1/2 M standard for 40+ had been raised to 1:29 not 1:28
for NYC, I was thinking that might be realistic for me. That extra minute is
    going to make it tough.

  16. okay...i did not say i was certain...but there is some fudge index or
something w/BQ times as you noted. i'm not 100% sure how it
works.....but my point is CP BQ is likely more forgiving than
    3:15....but I could be wrong....

It's simple you can run 59 seconds over the stated time.
    3:00 = 3:00:59
    3:15 = 3:15:59

    etc, etc.....

If you're close and there are extenuating circumstances you can
sometimes appeal to the BAA and they'll let you in; I heard of people
in the last Las Vegas Marathon, where it was extremely windy and times
were slow, just missing their BQ times and being allowed in anyway
after asking for consideration. Something like the train that blocked
the course at CIM a couple of years ago might also be cause for an
    exception.
