Have decided to invest in a decent waterproof jacket for regular hiking.
Realise existing old cheap coat is heavy, sweat inducing and not very
waterproof.
Have been told that the Gortex range is excellent although not cheap.
Any advice/Pointers welcome.
I've got a Regatta that I was forced to buy after my more expensive
Berghaus was nicked from a pub on the second day of a weeks trip to
the lakes.
Rather than buy an expensive replacement straight away, I like to make
sure I buy the right thing and not waste money on mistakes, I opted
for the cheap Regatta, it was supposed to be both waterproof and
breathable.
I paid £40 or £50 for it, it was reduced, from £70 or £80. It has
Gor-Tex type water proofing called Isotex, it covers the upper thigh
has a hood and the usual walking jacket pockets for maps etc. It has
internal zips so you can attach a fleece in winter. Also the
adjustable elasticated waist and to stop the wind getting in.
It was supposed to last me the week and then I was going to use it as
a spare after I got a better one.
The week in the Lakes was in February and we had all sorts of weather,
the Regatta was comfortable and very warm when worn over my good
quality fleece, it has a well fitting hood with a wire peak that keeps
the rain/snow out.
It never leaked once and performed way, way beyond my expectations, my
expensive Berghaus wouldn't have been any better!
I never did replace it and I'm still using it today, I've had it over
ten years, it's still waterproof but is looking a little scruffy.
I have no idea what the quality of the current Regatta jackets is like
but I'll certainly be looking at them when I buy a replacement,
something I plan to do this autumn.
