I would guess that the pulse will be the limiting factor - isn't the
safe maximum 220 minus your age ?

Walking on the flat won't trouble it, but walking uphill may, also
depends upon the backpack weight if you carry one.

max. is 126 for my age and resting pulse rate of 48

Weird quoting - ///// can you change it to attribute the poster, put a
newline in and use the more standard > character ?

Where do you get 126 from ?

It's a matter of argument between medical people I guess.

I find the Brian Mac pages interesting, see his comments

I'm impressed with your resting pulse of 48 - wish I was that fit at
    age 37 !

    FOAD!

OK, here goes: find a fit 80 year old, and shove the sharp end of a
walking pole in the small of his back and time him for one mile.

The 126 came from some medical site..forget which one...but it also said
that there would be little benefit from going over that rate??????????a few
years back my resting rate was an even 45 but have 'slacked off' since
    then....H

    Ha ha!

    See you later, all.
I'm off to cause some tailbacks between here and the highlands.

  10. Harold,
you dont say if you mean walking on mountain terrain or on roads. I'd say
2.5 mph on roads but 1 to 1.5 on hills., but dont worry about speed- just
    keep enjoying it!
All the best, Rob (a mere 67!)
ps You're not old- just a young fella who's had a long life.

Watch out for busses ! Seriously, with you high level of fitness I
can't imagine walking is going to exercise you much - what about
trying running or mountain biking ?

Would love to run...as would love to play tennis but the knees refuse to
co-operate....one knee surgery was enough.....biking is on my list tho and
think nothing of a 25 miles spin early in the morning..used to be a 50 mile
spin before work and a 100 mile spin on week-ends....incidentally race
walking is every bit as challenging as running if not more so......the
Olympic walking marathon would be one hell of a challenge for those just
    training for the running marathon.....H

Ah - that is indeed a different ball game from what I hear - no
experience other than trying not to laugh at the participants strange
    mincing gait !

in which case you would get a periodic laugh at little old me still trying
me best at it.....when I retired 21 years ago I could walk 3 miles in under
    30 minutes (24 to be exact)....different story now tho....slowing down a wee
bit....average now is 45 minutes unless I wish to speed it up but see little
point now as I no longer do any more 'trying to overtake the guy in front of
    me'....the knees....H
