Volker Gringmuth said:After the rain desaster last year, I'm going to do another part of
the C2C together with another young friend ๐
Thanks for all advice. Just to keep the feeling, here's a brief
summary:
Arrived at Stansted Airport on time but missed the check-in to
Newcastle by six minutes (had taken hours until the first piece of
baggage finally appeared), so we went on by train via Peterborough and
Leeds to Kirkby Stephen (which after all was much cheaper than the
flight, for a friendly officer suggested us to buy a Family Railcard).
Made ourselves comfortable at the camp site.
Tuesday: Walked to Smardale Bridge and back - in order to both wake up
my walking muscles again and see if Florian has got any at all ๐
Weather was fine.
Wednesday: Heavy clouds (after rain in the night), but seemed to clear
up, so we left for the Standards. Turned out to be a fine but windy day
- it nearly blew us off the Rigg. Florian found it hard to climb the
last few metres of height (the path really looks steep after the narrow
footbridge) but saw that he had to ๐ Arrived at Park House camp site
just as the first shower was about to reach us. Florian found the
walking over the moor very hard and was glad to find a solid road at
Ravenseat.
Thursday: Warden said the forecast was bad. Clouds looked heavy but
dry, so I decided to take the upper route to Reeth and in the worst
case descend into Swaledale along Gunnerside Gill. Our braveness scared
the weather so it kept us dry, raining all around the spot where we
were. Reached Reeth after a fine day - but it was impossible to get
Florian on his feet again that evening once he had fallen down into our
tent.
Friday: Told Florian that this day's walk to Richmond was just a little
stroll, compared to the day before. Had to push him every mile then
because he understood that literally - but, after all, eleven miles are
eleven miles even if they're easy to walk. Went from Richmond on to
Brompton and fell into the friendly seats of the Camping Barn.
Saturday: Rest. Florian promised not to leave his bed but broke his
promise because he loves animals ๐
Sunday: Walk to Richmond, Bus to Darlington, Train to Newcastle,
Flights to Stansted and Stuttgart. It would have been cheaper and
quicker to go by train from Darlington to Stansted, considering all the
sitting and queueing and waiting at the airport, but Florian preferred
to fly one more time - well, he had not been on a plane until last
week.
For me it was a too-short bit of the Wainwright feeling but for Florian
it was great (and enough of walking), so it was a fine holiday after
all and compensates for last year's weather.
