Yup, it's really a disaster. I always get "you aren't subscribed to any
groups," no list along the left side of my screen, but when I go to
"Manage My Groups," there is the list. It takes FOREVER and requires
about 3 extra mouse actions to actually get to a group. Bah.

I find once you get everything set up and on the screen...it is easier to
just make a bookmark. The bookmark brings everything back with one click.

Um. Get a newsreader. Use--or subscribe to--a news (Usenet) feed.

Newsreaders: Agent from Forte (free version available) XNews.
NewsXpress. MT-Newswatcher (Mac) (there are many more) Lots of free
ones.
One can--and many do--use Outlook Express or Mozilla Mail or
Thunderbird for newsgroups. Dedicated newsreaders are better.

Lots of newsfeeds. Many, if not most, ISPs supply a newsfeed as part
of the subscription. (Comcast has quite a good one)

Google Groups is a good way to sample Usenet, or to look up old posts.

I've clicked the "Manage my subscriptions" and accessed
the list of newsgroups through there. Also on and off
the regular list has appeared.

It's becoming pretty rare for dial-up providers to have a newsfeed
these days, AOL dropped theirs some months back.

If you don't have a newsfeed available, an inexpensive choice for
text-only newsgroups is http://news.individual.net aka the German
Server. It costs 10 euros per year. Other, full, feeds run around $5 to
$10 per month.

Yup - today, it appears normal so far. When something is free, I guess
you get what you pay for....

I know about aol. That's too bad, too--they actually had about the
best newsfeed around. To go with the worst newsreader.

Newsguy (www.newsguy.com) has a basic feed for $40/year. Teranews has
a free 'feed--$3.95 US setup fee, but that's all. Bubbanews is free.
(www.teranews.com www.bubbanews.com )
I believe there are still a couple of other free newsfeeds out there,
but I'm unaware of 'em.
