Hi, I'm off to Whistler in a week. I'll be spending a couple of weeks there with some time in Squamish and Pemberton as well. I've got most stuff sorted, the only thing nagging at me at the moment is tyre choice. I'm usualy running race tyres (2.0 pythons, larsens etc) but they don't make much sense off the race track so was thinking of something bigger and grippier. From what I've heard the trails are rooty and the soil relatively slippery. I hate tyre shopping and came home yesterday with a 2.30 Hutchinson Octopus and a 2.25 Hutchinson Jumbo (front and rear respectively).
Now I'm looking at these tyres thinking they're overkill. I can replace them but are there smaller tyres that would be just as good for the conditions? I was thinking of the MTB park when I bought them but it seems a bit much for a few days of riding. I'll be hiring a DH bike for a couple of days just for fun.
I'm also thinking I'll throw in a pair of pythons as they're light and foldable, would they be much use on the XC trails?
Also, any recomendations on Hostels? I've booked the YHA for a couple of nights, it looks good but finding the best Hostel makes a big difference.
As far as trail recomendations go I've got a tonne of them. I won't be running out of places to ride.

Don't get worked up over tires. I use 2.1 Panaracer Fire XC Pros on every type of terrain without a problem. I'm too lazy to go switching rubber every different place I ride. The Pythons will be fine unless you're planning to do a lot of shuttlemonkey DH stuff.
what else do people do at whistler besides "shuttlemonkey DH stuff"? that's all i did, until i broke my collarbone and damned near the rest of my body in whistler! seriously, is there a lot of xc opportunity there?

You did not mention what bike you are taking. I would go with the biggest tires I could fit. I have never been to Whistler but at the other bike parks I have been at the soil was very loose.
I still want to ride/rent a downhill bike, I have never been on one.

yes, but it doesn't get the hype that the other does.

There is tonnes of XC. I've met people who've lived there for years and haven't ridden it all. There a quite a few 'epics' that I hope to get done while I'm there. I'm just as happy to climb a mountain as ride down it but that's not to say I won't spend a few days at the DH park.

Oops, forgot to mention it's a hardtail. One of the main reasons for different tyres was pseudo rear suspension. I picked up a 2.3 Hutchinson Spider for the back which should be much more squishy. I can't go too big as the mavic 717 rims aren't very wide and tyre roll gets bit annoying.

Same, it was half the reason I decided to go. Couldn't wait for summer here for the ski runs to go back to MTB parks.

Just because there is no psuedoendurance race there, it doesn't mean therre are no cross country routes. Following a thundering herd doesn't take a map, or a compass for that matter.
