  1. 3/8" cut in the sidewall of my rear bontranger has me looking for a
new tire. Only about 600 miles on it so I'm rather disappointed and
want to try a different training level tire. Best value?

And should I replace the front with the same while I'm at it?

    Gracias,
    D

  2. How do you blame the manufacturer for a cut in the sidewall?

600 or 6 miles, if you scrap the tire's sidewall its your riding that is the
    problem not the manufacturer.

  3. Hey top poster, is that helping?

If you're riding down a smooth hill at 35mph at the start of a 30 mile
training ride you've been looking forward to all week, but putting off
because [censored] keeps coming up, and you hear what sounds like a glass
pop bottle being hit with a big rock....... Are you thinking "Hell
yeah! I can't wait to push this back up the hill (only .5 miles or I
would have patched) and order another tire exactly like this one"?

It's likely that I did scrape something at some point in the past. Or
maybe I pinched it in a pot hole last time out.... Though I don't know
of many people who are as particular as I am about such things.

Either way, I'm wanting to take my chances with another tire.

If you think the Bontrager is great then give me a model. Regardless,
    be constructive.

    Thanks,
    DaveofYourMom'House

  4. use your old racing tires that you don't trust for race-day due to
tread wear, but add Mr. Tuffies. That's a cheap and durable system.

Try Continental Ultra Gatorskins. They claim to have a protective belt that
goes from one bead to the other (i.e. covers the sidewalls as well). I have
no experience with them, but I might try them as my next set of
    training/racing tires.

There is a two day ride in WA called the Courage Classic. My shop says after this
tour, many riders come in with some sorry looking tires. But, they say, they have
    never seen a Specialized Armadillo
    http://www.epinions.com/content_67303804548
come back after a difficult tour.

Although they are somewhat heavy, I have used them about 3 months about 2000 miles
with no problems. I have them on both front and rear wheels

    That's a pretty good testament.

My wife is going past the Specialized shop this morning (40 miles
away) so I've sent instructions and money with her. Fingers crossed
that she comes back with the right things.

Thanks to everyone for the help. Even Jay, ;-)

    Best value?

I like the Tufo 195 gram tubular for training. Bomber.

  9. And it won't have any effect on a sidewall cut either.

    Dumbass,

Good traction, few pinch flats, and once you're fast on these,
you'll absolutely rail on race day. You might need a bit more
clearance if your frame is set up for stupid-small tires.

For god's sake don't replace a good front tire when a rear
wears out. The front is like new. Move the front to the rear
and put the new tire on the front.

Thanks chuckles. Now THAT is a training tire.

I'm a weirdo so I'll probably still replace the 'like new' front tire
and keep it as a spare for next time. I live 35 miles from the
nearest LBS so it's always good to have some extra [censored]. If I'd had
some extra [censored] this time I could have been our riding instead of
    shopping online for tires.

Having a spare is a good idea, but you can also boot a 3/8" cut
with a energy bar wrapper or Tyvek. (Be a cheap bike racer, get
a lifetime supply of free Tyvek from Fed Ex or Priority Mail envelopes.
The stuff is nearly indestructible.) Not a long term fix, but gets
you home, or riding until you get a new tire.

Damn, now I see why they hold up. It feels like you're riding on
plastic. And that's how they feel to the touch. Calling for 115/125
psi..... like rocks. Rougher ride with less resistance but the grip
seems good. Black with ugly burnt red sidewalls... $30 each.

As long as they hold up I'm happy as a clam.

    Thanks again!

Or a dollar bill (folded over a few times, of course). I usually have a
piece of a tubular case in my patch kit to use as a boot, but I forgot to
replace it one time and used the dollar I keep in there instead. Worked
    fine.
