  1. Anyone know of a way to tighten the spring in the rear derailluer of a
Shimano? The reason I'm asking is that when I bounce over trees or rocks,
the chain gets real sloppy and if I'm pedaling... the chain can slip,
usually causing me to slow down or come to a stop. Is there something that
I'm doing or can do to prevent this from happening?

    Thanks,
    Charles

  2. remove links from the chain

Shimano stuff is not servicable, no parts are sold. Throw it away and get a
    new one.

Umm, it could be brand new? I have a brand new XT that bounces like a
[censored] all over the place unless i remove enough links to restrict my
    gearing.

You can tighten the cage pivot spring on some Shimano derailleurs. It
requires taking the cage apart so that just the side plate attached to the
nuckle remains. Then unscrew the small post that stops the cage and allow
the spring to relax. Remove the pivot bolt and carefully remove the side
plate. You'll see that there is another hole position for the spring. Move
the spring to that position and reassemble. Rotate the side plate to put
tension on the spring and replace the stop post (put some blue loctite on
    its threads).

    Your in luck...

Depends on what the problem is and how stubborn you are. If it's a new bike from a shop, take it back and tell them your problem. Otherwise wrong chain length seems like one probable cause. If that is OK you might think about how the bike has been used. It's not unheard of to have rust/dust penetrate into the pivot, causing it to jam. Dissasembly, clean and reassembly tends to fix that. Do note that the spring is under some tension which can make reassembly a bit of a challenge.
Not having the wheel all the way back can also cause troubles with the RD.

In extrreme cases it might be needed to tighten the spring by drilling a new retainer hole.

It was a joke, gawd, people take things so seriously! Do some research,
there are ways to fix up the derailleur so it works fine. Someone gave you
the Sheldon Brown link, study it and fix your derailleur up and get back to
    the dirt.

It was a joke, I was mocking Shimano's style of "throw it away and buy a new
    one" policy...

    🙂 True.

Try using 🙂 or 🙁 or 😄 or :-p - makes it easier to figure out if you

Oh and shortening the chain a bit would put more tension on it. Since it is
a new bike there may be a little more chain on it than it really needs.
Shift up into the big ring on front and rear and see how much the cage is
pulled forward. If there's still some slack you and try removing a link or
    two.
