Chains

what brand of gears do you have and how many speed on the back?

Probably depends on how "core" you are...

As long as the cheaper chain is the right sort for your bike (mainly depends
on how many gears you have - more gears equals thinner chain plates), it
will work. It may wear a bit faster, but will it wear nearly three times as
fast?

<anecdotal>I have never found any performance difference between different
levels of the same brand of chain other than wear (and bugger all difference
there). Oh - and bling factor. I've broken Shimano and SRAM chains, cheaper
and more expensive on my mtb - I blame the masive power I generate - that's
my story and I'm sticking to it!</anecdotal>

the only real difference is that the more expensive chains are ligher
and sometimes last longer. They are most unlikely to break, but they
stretch faster, so you have to replace them more often, and your
cassette & rings.

That bike you have is good, btw. I have a 2002 Trek 1400 and have put
52,000km on it with no major problems. (I also have a Trek Madone 5.2,
with ZERO km's on it! Soon, my pretty .. soon!)

If you get a shimano 105 chain (to match your groupo) then you will be ok. I personally have got an Ultegra chain on my roadie and use wipperman 904 chains on my mtb's. Generally all that happens on the more expensive chains is that they nickel plate the links so that they look nice and shiny for longer and clean up a little better. If you have lots to spend you can order a wipperman chain with titanium links......but its a special order to length from germany.
