  1. Saw this on another Ng and thought some of you might find it more than
    interesting...

    You can search almost anywhere on earth and in a lot of places get really
    detailed arial photos. I downloaded the free one and have just spent too
    much time travelling along the Thames identifying various landmarks (The
    Globe, Barnes Wetland Centre, Dorney Rowing centre etc). Have yet to see
    what some of my walks look like. :-)

    Bob.

  2. cool site..cheers Bob 🙂
    ...can see potential for many wasted hours !!

    Has anyone compared this with NASA Worldwind?
    <http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov>

    Worldwind is a big download and a CPU and bandwidth hog so I won't add
    another unless there are some real advantages.

    One thing I do like about WW is that, from a geographic location, you
    can create a URL like this one for Ben Nevis
    <worldwind://goto/world=Earth&lat=56.797636&lon=-5.002772&view=0.25>
    that will open WW and take you to a view of the place.

    Google are not operating on the NASA shoestring budget, and can afford to
    license more 3rd party mapping because of it. There is some high-res
    imagery around Loch Lomond for example. You can tell apart different cars
    in Rowardennan and see trees on Ben Lomond. It's possible to follow the
    path visually up to the top ... some armchair baggers might enjoy.

    Google Earth has a lot more by way of hillnames, although the spelling is
    ghastly, I've no idea why it should be so bad. You can add your own hill
    names to World Wind if you're that way inclined, not exactly
    straightforward though.

    I prefer the World Wind interface, the Google Earth controls seem clumsier
    and back-to-front.

    I think Google Earth has more in the way of supported graphics hardware.

    I prefer the extensiblity and feel of World Wind, but the project seems to
    have stagnated lately, and the chances of high-res imagery of the UK
    becoming available in it seem remote.

    [snip]

    Thanks for the comparison. I see the hi-res maps are available on the
    <http://maps.google.com> web site. Presumably the main advantage in
    having the system is the fly / tilt / rotate functionality.
