I had a look at that tube today. It's been taped on there for about 2
years now. No idea of the total mileage, but certainly a few hundred,
mixed on road and off.
When I taped it on, I'd had two blowouts in the space of a month or so.
I took the idea from club bicyclists, who often tape a spare tube under
the saddle. I've never had another blowout.
Looking at the spare tube now, it's undamaged, and not perished.
However, the sort of riding I've done has been more adventurous than I
expected 2 years ago, and the tube is covered with a fine film of
slightly gritty mud which would be difficult to clean off before
fitting.
With that in mind, the looping it through the frame idea would not work
for off road riding. It might work for pure road riding.
There's some strange psychology here, because I had two dramatic blow
outs on the 700c, I've carried a tube ever since, like a talisman. I
don't carry a spare MUni tube when I'm MUniing, and I certainly don't
carry a spare Coker tube.
The ideal has to be a tube in some sort of protective pouch under the
seat.
