    I've always used a rear cycle carrier, however, I'm not looking at getting a
    roof carrier. Basically when the car is fully loaded with camping gear
    putting three bikes on a rear carrier puts too much weight on the rear of my
    vehicle, hence, the roof carrier will/should distribute the weight better.

    Can help with the following questions.

    1. Any recommendations for a roof cycle carrier. I'm looking to carry three
    bikes.

    2. I'm looking to change my car soon. I do not have a car with built in
    roof bars going down each side. Looking at the cycle carriers on the
    Halfords web site they show that I will require bars going accross he front
    and back of my roof in order to fit a cycle carrier. Is it better to have a
    car with built in roof bars going down each side or not. What I don't quite
    understand is that if I have bars going down the sides, what benefit are
    they? I currently drive a scenic, which has the facility to put bars from
    one side to the other, this in my mind, sounds the better option as I will
    only have the bars going acorss and not both ways if I had built in roof
    bars.

    Hope that I've explained myself well enough for someone to reply.

    1. Cheapest Thule cycle carrier (575, ukp 25 each), mounted two forward
    and the middle backward. Very solid and lockable.

    2. Having both, I'd choose a car with integral roof bars every time.
    Makes removal of the cross bars and cycle carriers (still attached)
    much easier. without integral roof bars, alignment becomes critical,
    and you will be installing the complete structure (not one cross bar at
    a time then add the cycle carriers). My Vento still bears the scars of
    a failed installation, and I never take the rack off now.

    3. A scenic is quite tall, you may want a sturdy step to help mounting,
    particularly the middle bike.

    Once you've tried roof mounting, you'll never go back to rear carriers
    (although some of the towball racks are impressive). BEWARE OF CARPARK
    BARRIERS...

    Total cost would be about 75 for the carriers and the same for the bars
    from <\url: www.roofbox.co.uk> I've used them before.

    And your own garage! You can buy (somewhere, can't find a link) a sign
    that hangs down from the inside of the garage door when it's open :-
    "WARNING - BIKE ON ROOF!"
    or alternatively you can make a smaller version and hang it on the
    rear-view mirror.

    (Not that I have a garage... grumble grumble... Victorian terrace...
    grumble grumble... 4 bikes in house... SWMBO grumbles....)

    On that note, I now have a Vauxhall Zafira.
    I used to have a Scenic, which I liked, but find the Zafira better.
    The diesel engine is great. The interior space is more 'square

    ahem. Sorry.
    The interior is more 'square' than a Scenic, so you can get more kit in.
    The sliding/folding rear seats are great, and you save detaching and
    lugging the seats out, as you do with the Scenic.
    I've had four people in the car, plus a bike which went in with the front
    wheel off and one rear seat folded down.

    Vauxhall have a new model out now, but it might be well worth seeing
    what discount you can get on the original models.

    Sadly I didn't get roof bars on mine.

    A question I want to ask - Vauxhall list an interior cycle carrier,
    which looks like a quick release which either straps of bolts to a rear
    seat when it's folded down.
    Anyone used these interior carriers, any recommendations for alternatives?
    I think there is one which goes across the rear of an estate.

    ps. I am now a marked man on u.r.c. since mentioning the c** word.

    Ahem: you might not go back to hang-on rear carriers, but no way would
    I want to go from towball mounted rear carrier back to roof-mount.
    And my car has a low roofline and roofbars.
