  1. Hi all, total newbie here.

I'm not sure where I should be posting this, as this place is cavernous - feel free to direct me to where my post will be most suitable and best answered, if this shouldn't be here.

Anyhoo, I'm basically a lardass who hasn't cycled for 12 years (I'm 28 now) and have recently decided to change my lifestyle and sort meself out. I've been playing footy (soccer to you non-brits on here), tennis and done a little running, but they're all playing hell with my knees seeing as I'm a pretty heavy chap at the moment. Hence the newfound interest in cycling - easier on the knees, great exercise, scenic, and I can improve incrementally too.

I dearly need advice on what type of bike to buy (used to have a Carrera mountain bike when younger, 18-speed, toe-clips etc., but can't remember its frame size), where to get it from, and whether or not the damn thing won't collapse from under me!! I'm 5'11'', 20 stone (14 1/2 when I was thin - big bones 😉 ) with 29'' inner leg length, if that's of any consequence...

I mainly plan to start cycling on quiet country lanes in the main, flattish to start with, but don't want to buy a road bike only to decide that I want to begin offroad stuff when I get better - there's some nice hilly country around here, and I can't really afford two bikes.

Ideally I'd not want to spend more than £250 on the bike itself, then accessories taking the price up to £300. I read in a previous thread that Halfords should be avoided at all costs - is that the general opinion? If so, where else should I buy from?

Much appreciated if you could help me - jibe away if this comes across as pathetically naive or whatever, or if you just hate tubbies! But constructive answers would make me a happy chappy! Thanks in advance.

  2. I think you have short legs, just like me 😄 I have a Bianchi with 55cm frame and it treats me great. Also have a Trek MTB: size Medium, 17.5 in. If you are getting a brand new bike, go to your local bike shop and get measured.

Also I say this to everybody. You get what you paid. It's a big and long term (to some people) investment. Don't get a crappy bike and complain later.

    Good luck!

  3. Consider a second hand road bike. As you are in the UK you can pick up Cycling Weekly and look in the classifieds. For £250 you can get a decent machine.

Halfords is good for sizing. Go there, sit on a few and note the size that feels best...

Look on ebay too and use caution whenever you buy a second hand bike from anywhere.

    Cheers.

  4. Hi - I recently (couple of months ago) bought a Giant X-Road (ladies version) - was working on the same budget as you, the bike it'self was a shade under £300 but I liked it and so just got the other bits the following month ( to be fair I already had a helmet and lock both of which you must get if you don't already have them). I really, really love it - it's my most favorite thing😄 It's kind of between a road and mountain bike but it's great for the road commute and cobbles/kerbs etc and more than happy if I want to go off on shaley cinder paths etc. I wouldn't want to set off on a massive off road adventure with it, mainly because that's not my thing, but I reckon it can handle anything likely to get thrown at it -within extremes.

I'm no expert, and didn't try to pretend I was when I was buying it. If you go to a bike shop and ask questions if they're any good they'll help you out, if not walk away and spend your money somewhere else. Insist on trying it before you buy it, sounds daft but one place I went to were aghast when I had the 'audacity' to suggest I might ride it round the block before I made a purchase... needless to say I didn't buy from them!! The place I went to in the end were great and actually ordered in a couple of bikes for me to try and if I didn't like them put them into stock - no pressure at all.

Whatever you get, make sure it's comfy for you to ride and enjoy it, good luck 🙂

    El
