Should keep you googling for a few days.......

You might want to decide on panniers/saddlebag/trailer first since some
the above bikes work
with different luggage arrangements and loading styles.

Out side the US, touring bikes are divided into Trekking, Camping and
Rando, depending on country
of origin. Next time try a less contentious question like who's god is
smarter.

Why don't you take a look at the Waterford site? They have a good full
bore touring bike there and two sport touring models. I think it would
be hard to spend $10K there. You could spend $4K pretty quick. You get
custom geometry and 853 or True Temper steel. I've heard good things
about Co-Motion too.

The scope creep starts when you spec stuff like German dyno-hubs for
lighting, over-the-top pannier systems and carbon fiber fenders.

There is no single best bike. Your first consideration should be a good fit,
but you can buy complete bikes with full custom frames for under $3000.
Beyond that, you should be looking at special features for your special
needs.

How about day touring (luggage carried on chase van)? I looked at the
high-end Treks (about $7000) - sport/performance.

Titanium, carbon.

Understand, for now I am just dreaming. I have a Trek 2600 (?) that is
about 8 or 9 years old -- carbon frame, aluminum alloy forks.

BTW, whose god is smarter? :-) :-)

(waxed cotton duck)

Custom nitto tubular racks to hold these bags.

A definite must have. Sitting on carbon seat post I assume. I was
tempted to add the Alpha Q XC fork to my original post, mustn't attach

I'd opt for beefed chain and seat stays so the BOB would track nicely.
You could still have the racking though. Looks cool. Maybe get a taser
set up to run off the dyno hub. Good for doggies and naives.

I think it's getting closer to the $10K. If you put a Serotta decal or
five on, chuck another piece of carbon somewhere, paint it with gold
metal flake... You are there.
