  1. As I mentioned a bit back, I am visiting the Ancestral Homeland at
the end of this month, and was wondering if any Dundonian URCers fancy
meeting up and perhaps having a ride (bearing in mind neither the
gears on my bike nor the gears in my legs are set up for Hills)?

I'm around all day on Saturday 30/07 and much of Sunday 31/07 (taking
train back Down South that evening), staying with family near Fowlis
(Piperdam to be specific). I need to spend some time each day with my
Gran in Mill O'Mains but times are flexiblem and apart from that I
have no plans (although a paddle at the Ferry and ice-cream at
Visocchis beckon if this weather keeps up).

Well, I am around and would be happy to meet up..

Pete and I leave that Saturday, orienteering 6-days in Deeside. We may be
around in the morning but it would have to be a very short trip - we're
only home for a few days, we come back the Wednesday before from a
Shetland paddling trip (proper paddling with sea kayaks, why is wading
through water called paddling as well?).
We could just do the ice cream bit of the trip :-)

Oddly, I'm travelling up to Dundee on the 30th and will be staying in
Fowlis that night (before heading off for some orienteering further north.)

That will be that same orienteering thingy then 🙂
We're going up on Saturday so Pete can get some new shoes, and we can try
to sleep through the Stutas Quo concert next door.
I'll be manning the computers some of the days.

Ob bike content: are you doing the bike orienteering on the day off on
Wednesday? I'll probably bring Pete's bike and decide nearer the time. And
they want us to wear lids, what for that sort of event may be reasonable
(though I haven't done mountain bike orienteering before)

    I expect so!

I'll try to remember say hello but if it's at download don't expect
    coherence.

I'll probably not be doing the MTBO as I'm with a non-cyclist for the
week. We may do the park orienteering or we may just head for the hills
and put in a day's walking.

What appeals to me about the MTBO is that it is real cross-country,
rather than score, which is a rarity.

  7. well I am open to offers re: time place etc etc, either here or by
email. I'm at Herriot-Watt from Saturday (the joys of OU summer
skool) but presume they will let me have go on their interweb so I
can check google groups and email

  8. PS if we don't meet up but you happen to see a lady of the largish
persuasion on a green bike (with fetching red bottle cage) looking
confounded by the sight of Hills, give me a wave

Took my youngest out in the child seat last night as I wanted to go for
a ride and the others were off with SWMBO to see 'Madagascar'. Nice
ride up through Strathmartine, Bridgefoot to Auchterhouse, down to
Dronley, ice cream in Birkhill and then to Camperdown for the wee one
to play. Lovely evening and not as slow as I thought it would be with
him on the back and lots of lumpy bits.

The Hills aren't really that bad, and if you want the 'least hilly'
    routes, we can advise.

Ta muchly, you and Roos gave me some adivce about best options for
    getting to Fowlis.

I've been looking at the OS map and there are far too many brown lines
for my liking but I'm sure it won't be that bad when I get there. And
I can always get off and push. It's my mum putting me off. I've had
several conversations with her expressing concern and disbelief that
my inferior English legs[1] will cope with the might of Dundonian
Hills. "You'll never make it up Birkie Brae on a bike!".

    Audrey

[1] You'd think it was my fault that I have inferior English legs and
haven't be properly brought up amongst True Hills in the environs of a
Proper River in finest City known to humanity (and centre of the known
universe). Like it was my decision to move to the English midlands
(with its lack of hills, pathetic excuses for 'rivers', vile accents
and hopelessly inferior education system) the year before I was born.

Can and do. And you don't have to go all the way up as you can head off
    through Liff.
And even if you need to walk, the steep part is then not very long.
Then again, most people wouldn't consider being able to get up anything
that looks vaguely uphill. The rest of it is pretty easy.

Heriot Watt? I'm 1.5 miles from there. If I shout you might just hear
    me.

    HELLO.

Looking at the scarey timetable, I won't have time.

Anyway I should get on with my packing. I've never tried to pack
stuff for a whole week into panniers before. The panniers that looked
plenty big enough in the shop seem to have shrunk ...
