Dang.. it was 78 degrees here at 6:30 AM. Its gonna hit 94 or so, and thats AFTER a small cool front
hit. Texas sucks in the summer.

90% humidity?

Nope, it was more like 50% - almost unnaturally pleasant for this time of the year. Cool air
on bare shoulders is such a treat - better than chocolate. Well, better than milk chocolate,
anyways. There's not much that's better than dark chocolate, at least not that you can do
solo, outside, with a bike. It was a fun ride, too. Very few people out and about yet, with
the exception of a high school track team who thoughtfully removed most of the night's
accumulation of spider webs for me. I saw the lot of them later, swimming in the river,
their running shoes in a big, stinky pile on the beach. Can't say the thought didn't cross
my mind, but I knew it'd be a long, squishy drive home with no dry shorts to change into, so
I refrained. Back on the Stinging Nettle Loop, I was riding along, admiring the way the sun
slanted through the trees, lighting up the deep shade with patches of blinding white gold.
Pretty, but my pupils were slamming open and closed, trying to keep up, and I was wondering
to myself what color lenses would be adequate to that kind of contrast, when I noticed the
forest, or at least part of it, was flying directly toward me. Fortunately, at that point,
the part of my brain devoted to self-preservation grabbed the helm from the thinking part
(that was mainly thinking "AHHH!!!" at the time) and threw me hard to the right and down, so
that the hurtling piece of woodland barely grazed my arm instead of smacking into me head
first. I was back on my feet and staring wildly after the retreating white tail before the
word "fawn" entered my consciousness. Then I had to duck and flinch again, waiting for mama
to come flying past. After I uncovered my head, though, I saw the doe off in the brush -
ahead of the fawn, not behind it. No wonder he'd been in such a hurry. So I got my dose of
adrenaline for the day.

I wish.. it's 99 outside with no break in sight. Typically you don't need AC around here, but after
a week of heat stressed sleep it's really starting to wear. It's a good thing we installed a
thermostatically controlled attic exhaust fan when we did the roof.
NORBA should be tons of fun... at the higher elevation I imagine it's going to be 85 instead of 99.
Heat and dust... someone tell why I signed up to do this, was it for the T-shirt? Certainly not for
wading around in ankle deep dust, telling people to keep off the frickin' course. Maybe the berry
picking? It's supposed to be a good huckelberry crop this year.
In addition to the usual carnage ont eh DH course, I expect Mr. Penny to be dealing with a bit of
heat exhastion on the XC races One redeeming factor is that Sandpoint has an absolutely lovely city
beach. (Tahoe-esque) sandpoint.comlake3.htmOpen ↗ that we can come down to

In case no one mentions it, thanks to you and Mr. ¢ for watching out for us stupid DHers. ;^) It's
really a boost to one's confidence that someone is going to be right there to pick up the pieces.
Mike - But also wishing the only thing you're picking is huckleberries!

( as she's waiting for hubby to come home so we can leave....)
Mike, maybe you can explain to me the logic of people who race/ride DH and don't carry life health
insurance?
yeah, I know young and stupid.
I still remember a guy being backboarded off the course a few years ago, with a helicopter on the
way, and the girlfriend crying, "he doesn't have health insurance..." dude, you need to think
about that **before**....
and duh, other riders can get really hurt too, but if you are going to hurl yourself down a slope on
a 50# bike catching air and going really fast.... over rocks....

Yeah, I know guys who just don't care, or are thinking they're invincible ("young and stupid"😉. I
personally have very good health care coverage and a fair sense of responsibility which keeps me
within my limits ("married, parent, old and stupid"😉. OTOH you can get creamed driving to work,
insurance or no. After I broke my elbow, hair on fire going down a slalom course a friend told me he
broke his elbow slipping in the shower and I know another who broke his losing balance while
throwing a bag of trash off his truck into a dumpster. Given the choice, I'd do it my way. ;^)

I rode in 90 degree weather with about 100% humidity as it was raining off and on. What kept going
through my mind was The beginning of Platoon with Charlie Sheen. In real life I don't think I would
be able to hack it the way those guys did under much worse conditions.

Indeed she would! I even got up early so I could enjoy the cool temps on the way to work. Having
just come back from the Quetico, I think this weather is great. Shall we leave the thermostat set
there until October or so?
