There's a chart at the bottom of

it'll tell you who does what.

You ought to be able to, but using a long-axled 120 or 126 hub with
spacer washers is a perfectly good fix also. I run a 120 Miche hub in a
126 frame, and the axles on that setup protrude from the nuts by about
6mm each side.
