running shorts. They're lighter, cheaper, quicker drying and better

Potential downsides are they're not endowed with pockets and they're not
as tough. The pockets thing can be annoying but if you can arrange
alternatives (for example, a top with pockets or a rucksack with pockets
on the belt) then you've got less stuff where it will impede freedom of
movement and stop the shorts breathing so well.

Another potential downside is they're more revealing of your figure.
I'm not proud, and I figure it's somebody else's problem if they don't
like my shape, but if you're just not psychologically comfortable in
skimpier shorts then that's a good reason not to wear them: comfort in
the mind is as important as comfort on the body. But if you don't feel
self conscious in them then IME they are a lot more comfortable for
covering distance in.

These could be lycra skin-tight ones or (my preferred sort) looser
shorts as more often sported by distance runners. or knicker-shorts for
the ladies I like the wrapover style myself. Go to a running shop (not
a clueless high street box shifter who happens to sell trainers) and try
some out for size.

I've got a pair of Crag Hopper Combats that have removable legs to make
them into shorts, they are quick drying and comfortable

Keep an eye on Lidl and ALDI deals for their Outdoor kit. I bought 2 pair
of shorts a few weeks ago from ALDI and they are brilliant. Plenty of
pockets, including one on each leg capable of holding a map, plus back
pockets and zip inner side pocket for keys etc. Eleasticated waist with
button fastening. Quick drying too. All for 6 pounds sterling a pair.

Billy bargain ........... but no brand name! Oh well, they do the business.

I wear Rohan Bags for general slobbing about - pricey but they last years
(i've just bought 2 new pairs 'cos my existing ones are getting a bit worn
after 18 years) - but I've never been keen on them for walking. A bit too
tight I would say. However, Rohan shorts I've always found ideal and
similarly rugged, which I reckon makes them good value. The current ones
seem a bit longer than my good old ones. I think it's the current fashion
though I tend to like my shorts short - I'm not keen on the Danny
Blanchflower look.

Like Mr. Clinch, I quite like running shorts as an alternative when it's
hot. A bit of a hangover from when I used to be daft enough to run around I
suppose.

That's why I much prefer Goas (now discontinued, Bah!) to Bags for
slobbing about, though I wear Bags to work as the Fashion Police
have deemed them smart enough.

They are. A few years ago they did a separate model that was a
fair bit longer still, which suited me as the aforesaid Fashion
Police, having grudgingly admitted that shorts make some sense on
hot days in summer when you're in a south facing room with
continuous windows, comedy air conditioning and rather a large
number of power supplies always on the go, decided that the
original Bags Shorts were too short for Public Decency. The
subsequent longer models are, apparently, not too shocking, so it
means I can wear them to work if it's roasting.

I'm wearing a pair of the originals as I type this: great for
slummage of an evening at home, and since the pair I'm wearing were
bought in the late 80s they're clearly not too badly made.

Ah sounds familiar. Down here in usually grey and drab Manchester it was so
stifling in the orifice I had to make a unilateral declaration of dress
down day - all week. That and regular trips into the comms room to cool
down.

I have two pairs of zip offs, and I often half undo the zips to give a bit
of ventilation, whilst still giving protectiona agains nettles etc. One
pair unzips to the rear, the other to the front. Unziping to the rear is by
far the better option, as it gives better cooling and you don't end up with
your knees sticking out as your leg bends.
