7s upgrade question

    Can I use a Shimano 105STI lever with Hyperglide 7s cassette, or do I need to change over rear hub
    to 9s? I recall reading something about pinning the cable over the top of the retainer bolt to give
    different travel. My partner's bike has a Shimano 105 groupset (7s Hyperglide) and I'd like to swop
    her indexed downtube shifters to a pair of 105 STI levers (brifters) I have in the spare parts box.
    Is this do-able? These questions come with an apology in advance since I see there's been a lot of
    questions along this line lately, and I probably should know the answer myself.

    if you've got $30 in the budget, you can buy a 9s 105 cassette, take off the largest cog and put 8
    on the 7s hub.

    If it's 9s lever, stack 8 of 9 cogs/spacers from a 9s casstte onto the 7s freewhub body, get a 9s
    chain, use the 105 9s lever-

    not really a carrier. just 3 bolts running through six (?) of the cogs. take out the bolt, voila!
    nine loose cogs!

    Oops, you're right, the 105 equipped bike I was looking at has an HG90 cassette, not the same one.
