Perth riding

I took my roady to Perth last summer with no problems. I assembled it
at the airport when I got there and rode to my mate's place 🙂

Why the paranoia?

For a couple of weeks maybe it's worth finding a shop that sells second
hand bikes. You might be able to pick something up for $100 or so and
see if you could sell it back to them for half that. Worth thinking
about anyway. My first roadie was only $90 second hand from a bike shop.

not taking the chance, if it was an aluminium frame I would probably not hesitate, but Carbon Fibre is less resiliant to things being dropped on it and vice versa... 🙂 and if it just happens to happen, I am stuck without my bike, and I have heard it many to quite a few people I know... im not risking it... 🙂

And for that matter you can also shop for a secondhand bike in Perth via
the Quokka, the local version of the Trading Post readers mart
publication. And it has on-line items.
As to transporting a bike to Perth I've taken roadbikes, trikes,
folders, MTBs and no problems with any damage in transit. About a dozen
trips around the country. No carbon bikes of course but then it just
comes down to your packaging arrangements in that regard. If you aren't
using a hardcase then pad the frame with foam tubing and use cardboard
between the frame and wheels and between the wheels and inside of the
bikebag. Use spacers for the dropouts (those plastic things that bikes
are packaged with when first transported to the bikeshop in a cardboard
box), wrap the chain up in plastic and out of the way, take of the seat,
bars, cranks, anything else that sticks out or makes the package bigger,
use cable ties to hold everything together solid. In fact, funnily
enough, if you make your package look less like a bike it might also
travel better. Smaller is also always better.
But then it is your bike, your precious.

Hmmm..as a start I'd try the whitepages for:

Ideal Cycles, Hilton
Glen Parker Cycles, Nedlands
The Bicycle Entrepreneur, Nedlands, Belmont
Bike Force, Subiaco, South Perth/Kensington, Morley
Fleet cycles, Fremantle and Perth

These are the main road bike places in Perth, and I know at least Ideal and
BF South Perth/Morley have secondhand stock which I'm guessing would be
easier get them to agree to rent than new stock...

Have a call around and if you need a hand to have a look at one or whatever,
reply here and I'll do what I can. Otherwise, you might also post on
wa.general and look in www.quokka.com.au.

( I lent it to Gabriella Ekstrom when she was in Bunbury and she offered
me a pass to the Tour but sadly I didn't make it to France this year)

But a cheap second hand bike and take it with you, much easier to make the purchasing decision in your own town and you can always do with a spare bike!

It costs me about an extra $100 on top of my home and contents insurance (with Suncorp) to insure my road bike. It's covered for accidental loss and damage anywhere in Australia and for 60 days (or was that 30? or 90?) anywhere in the world. It's also covered for theft whilst parked in the car park at work...

That'd be a reasonably cheap way to go and you would still get to ride your own bike.

Thanks for the responses! All very helpful, im over here now and the hotel I have been put up has a gym association so during the week I am hitting the stationary bike, mentally challenging and I will organise to hire a bike sometime over the weekend and do a bit of a bike ride.

my bike is fully insured also, its just the fact if anything does happen, it will be very hard for me to replace the bike I have with the same bike, I got it during the last bicycling australia show, was in the right place at the right time, so its more the pain of going through all that again if anything did happen.

but its been good so far, getting some r**ning in and giving the stationary bikes at the gym a good work out.

I used to be with Suncorp, the extra cover for the bike was cheap and
awesome. Unfortunately, at home, I'm under the folks' policy... and
RACQ/GIO sucks.

Mikey,

what size you ride? If you can fit on a 58cm frame and don't mind riding an old steel tourer with mudguards, rack, and non-indexed DT shifters, I may have something you can borrow for the weekend. I may even have something similar in a 51cm or 53cm frame.
