  1. I have figs again. Not so many as last year -- the drought would
    appear to be responsible. But plenty figs, boys and girls. Plenty.

    So I stemmed a dozen ripe ones. Split them on the stem end in an X.
    Stuffed a small chunk (chunkette?) of blue cheese into the X. Broiled
    them 2 or 3 minutes. A little black pepper.

    Ate 'em up.

    Yum.

    Figs don't grow here in upstate NY... I hate you! LOL

    But we got pears, plump lascivious bartletts... goes well with
    gorgonzola.

    Figs grow in Texas, but won't grow in NY? ;-)
    Too cold?

    I like apples with cheddar personally!

    Peel, core, slice and nuke with shredded cheese on top. ;-d

    Man (woman?) you are lucky! I LOVE fresh figs - probably my favorite
    fruit. I love them in a salad with fresh tomatoes, cukes, and avocado,
    with a touch of a nice balsamic vinegarette dressing. Add some toasted
    baguette slices. Man, I am hungry just thinking about them!

    I too have plenty of figs. I'm trying to fine new ways to use them. Does
    anyone know anything about rumtopf ? Kind thinking about trying some.
    Never have made any and have no real recipe. Would love to have feedback
    on it. Also, don't even know if figs would be alright in it. I think
    its usually made with peaches and such , though. hugs, kate

    Man. Though in this disembodied forum I suppose it doesn't really
    matter. A salad is a good idea, by the way. I have so many figs that
    they're going bad. Well, some of them are. Sure wish I could get
    them to you and the others who like them. But that would require an
    embodied forum of some sort. Figgies don't travel well.

    Figgies... hmmm, that word makes me think of that Christmas song "We Wish
    you a Merry Christmas" which is believed to date back to the 17th century:

    We wish you a Merry Christmas;
    We wish you a Merry Christmas;
    We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
    Good tidings we bring to you and your kin;
    Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
    Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
    Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer
    We won't go until we get some;
    We won't go until we get some;
    We won't go until we get some, so bring some out here

    Sheldon,
    what do you do with the pears and gorgonzola? I mean, do you simply eat
    them together? Or do you cook them somehow? They are two of my husbands
    favorites, so I'd like to get some ideas 🙂
    I just discovered we have figs growing in the side yard. I didn't know what
    they were until I saw a drawing of a fig branch with fruit on it. lol

    It is a great combination. What I do is make a simple spinach salad
    (vinagrette, salt, pepper), then top with ripe pear slices,
    gorgonzola, and candied walnuts.

    What a sad situation... you with figs, us wishing for them. You with
    too-hot weather, us with OK weather (except for the humidity).

    Can you mush 'em and freeze them for later use?

    I just eat them together like brie and pears... the pear slice
    replaces a cracker.

    Not sad. Especially not for the local birds.

    Yup. I'm drying them, too. Got 1/2 gallon of dried figs as of
    tonight. Another batch is in the dehydrator right now along with a
    puree of figs spiked with pepper, jalapeno, rosemary, lemon zest,
    lemon juice, and salt. Making fig jerky, I am. I'll make another
    batch or two or puree and freeze, like I did last year.

    Can you preserve some? My DH's Aunt did that for me with some from her
    tree - it was a tad on the sweet side but heavenly on toasted bagels
    and baguettes, with ricotta.

    I'm not Sheldon but for dinner tonight I am having rack of lamb and a pear,
    gorgonzola, spiced pecan and grape salad with apple walnut vinaigrette. I
    made it a few weeks ago and it was truly delicious! If you're interested in
    the recipe e-mail me and I will forward it or post. The recipe comes from
    the cookbook "American Brasserie" by Rick Tramonto and Gale Gand.
