  1. Hi, no-one answred this "downstairs". I wonder if anyone here can help.

    Hey Everyone

I finally have a ticket to ride (license) and am thinking of racing (C Grade) for the first time in the next couple of weeks. Any words of advice or points of etiquette I should be aware of? What happens in a scratch race I assume there will be a point where all grades are on the course at the same time? So if you find you've been over or under graded are you able to hang on to the back of another bunch? Or do you have to stay with your grade the whole time until the final lap for example?

Can anyone tell me something about the Trentham East circuit with the Northern Combine? Like where the hell is it and if there is a course map available?

Sorry for all the questions but I promise I catch on quick!!😄

Start in D. You'll want to learn a lot before upping the pace.

    yes

    No.

You're not allowed at any point to draft behind another grade.

Google it! Seriously, most of the club sites have maps and/or
    directions to the courses.

  3. Thanks Carl, the best I could find on the club websites was a Melways reference for the starting point. I was wondering if anyone had a course map that's all.

Also I read elswhere on this forum where a newbie broke away from his grade and a marshall rode out to him and told him to wait for his bunch. Seemed to defeat the purpose of racing I thought! So I was wondering if you have to all stick together until the final lap perhaps.

With regard to not drafting other grades how do you know what grade a rider or a bunch of riders is in? Or do you just remeber the bunch you started with

  4. Maybe Googling might help me with this one, but does anyone out there know of a one stop shop for all road cycling competition equiette guildlines?

Seems that there is a science to road racing without stepping on peoples toes (over & above what would normally be regarded as fair sportmanship in other sports)............

Hey Deest. I'll endeavour to get back to you with more details on the Trentham East course in due course, but in the meantime here's some other Northern Combine course maps

    Your starting/meeting point is:
Trentham East – At the Pig & Whistle Hotel, Cnr James Lne & Pearsons Rd.
Pearsons Rd starts about 1km east of Trentham and heads due east. go a few km and you will get to the above intersection.
I dont know the course specifically, but the area is more flat/rolling hills than anything you'll see Rasmussen flying up!

    cheers

Have a look around, I think Sunbury have profiles of the
courses that get used in the northern combine.

    perhaps.

If the race is under control, which is often the case for the first
part of a lower grade race (and also the Tour de France!), then
attacks are disallowed until the control period is completed.

Be aware though, that if you are a lot (or just enough) strong
enough to solo off, that may not be in your long term
interests. There's more to winning races and enjoying
the racing than getting thrown quickly into a faster bunch. You
want to learn how to contest bunch sprints, how to read
a pack and position in it, how to race in hills, descents and
crosswinds and so on. I usually suggest to the riders that I
coach that they stay in a lower grade until they think they've
learnt as much as they can (or they get kicked up a grade
for winning too much!). You can learn a lot when you
have the energy to move around in a bunch and pay attention,
and make a few mistakes. As you go up the grades it gets
harder and more strategic, and the price of making tactical
    errors is greater.

Usually you'll know! Often the different grades have different
coloured numbers, and will (usually, but not always) be going
    significantly faster.

  7. The question that must be asked is..."is the flyingdutch(man) not Rasmussen?😄

The Pig and Whistle???? Are you serious? That RR you're after could be very interesting!

    'RancidReport' ??? 😄

regarding which grade is which, youre numbers are colour-coded. ie in the crits D-graders chase anything with a green number, C>>Blue, etc

    which club you with?

Rasmussen races for Rabobank but is a Dane!

    coaches and coaching websites 🙂

You may find this useful too :

It's aimed at crits, but is basically the same for road races.
