When a rider (like Hencapie) goes with the break away - how do they get support? I understand the feeding stations are stationary and they can use them - but - does the team car cycle back and forth to the break away and the chase or peleton?
I noticed a motorcycle passing out water along the way - is that how they support the break aways?
Normally there are two teamcars in support. If the break extends to more then 1 minute the teamcar can join the break. The 2nd car stays with the peloton ia. the important chasers. If your further down you may have a problem and depend on the neutral support or your fellow riders.
There are "neutral" drink posts like motorcycles, Mavic cars etc. Drinks are normally not taken from supporters but are normally used to cool off by pouring it over the head etc. These big plastic bottles are chaired between the riders.
A closed softdrink can may be used but can still be tricky if taken from a person you don't know.
Cheers,
Jan

I've seen a surprising number of riders grab water from spectators and actually drink it. Voight did it in the alps and I think I saw a Phonak or Euskatel rider do it today.

Yes, I thought I saw Pereiro (or some other rider in the break) doing this today. I thought the riders were very careful about picking up a "bug" during the tour. I suppose if it's hot enough, all water looks good.
(Not saying "the water in France is bad", but that sharing a bottle with a total, perhaps drunken, stranger is a bad idea)

How do you know the riders didn't know these specific fans. I read of a Dutch rider mentioning there were a few specific fans he knew and looked for in the mountins who would always give him and his team stuff.

Who? Peleton? "Break away"
NEWBIES!!!
K.P. it's a news group... not your own little circle jerk that you control who participates. I think the guy had a legitimate and clear question for the group. Seems Jan understood the question well enough to reply.
Your elitist attitude is getting old. People here [censored] and moan that cycling does not get the attention it deserves and then when "NEWBIES" do start coming around your pompous attitude sends them away.

Good point. There just seemed to be a lot of it going on - made me think they were taking water from anybody.
