  1. Hi everybody

Anybody here likes Basque food??? I am a Basque and love to cook. Got
tons of recipes and would love to share them with you all. Many of them
I learnt from my dad who in turn learnt them from my grandma and so on.
    You won't be disappointed.

    Agur!

I know very little about Basque food, and I'd like to learn more. Please
    share your recipes, and welcome!

I made something with a Basque tomato sauce from a newspaper article many,
many years ago. I've since lost the recipe, but I enjoyed it very much
when I made it. Welcome to rec.food.cooking.

Cool! Welcome to the group Zigor!

I first learned of the Basque people and some of their ways of life and
cooking through a cooking program back in the 80s; the Frugal Gourmet (Jeff
Smith). I would love to see some of your recipes and anecdotes!!

I know nothing about Basque cooking; I only know the Basque people are from
the Pyranees between France and Spain. Would love to hear more about Basque
    cooking!

We have a large Basque community here and a Basque cultural center
too... I don't know a single Basque recipe, but I enjoy it when it's
served to me. Please post some of your recipes!

Welcome, Zigor. I'm always ready to try something new (to me) to eat, so
please post. I'll look forward to it.

A friend of ours organizes the Basque picnic in the article below. The
last couple of years, I've made pintxos, including boquerones and an
ensalada of white beans and bacalao.

What would you suggest that would be authentic and good in the wood
burning oven? Maybe a leg of lamb in salsa viscaina?

Even if it's not authentic, it certainly sounds good! Do you have a
    recipe handy?

  12. My experience with Basque food is limited to the Ossau Iraty cheese that
we sell in the wine and cheese shop where I work. It is on the unusual
side as it is an aged ewe's milk cheese. Everyone who tries it loves it
as the flavor is both mild and complex. This ties in a little with the
language thread. Everyone who works there has taken some second
language at some time or another, so when we all saw the name of the
cheese, we kept trying to figure what root the words were connected with
and were running through Latin and French and German and coming up with
nothing. I finally came home and looked it up and learned that the
Basque language isn't related to any of the ones we'd studied. It is an
isolate not related to any language that we know about.

I got curious about Basque cuisine, did a brief google search and found
    this page which looks informative:

  13. Louis, is the Basque Hotel still a good spot in town to find decent
    (and inexpensive) Basque food?

  14. I was in Northern Spain a couple of years ago and we got far off the beaten
track in our pursuit of wineries. Eventually, we HAD to eat and the only
thing around was this truck stop looking place. We went in and tried to
make it work, despite one of our group being fluent in Spanish, we had hit
the language barrier. Seems that all that was spoken in there was Catalan.
We resorted to pointing and grunting and took our chances with what we were
going to get for food. By the time all was said and done, that truck stop
served up the best meal we had in Spain.

Bob ( who still longs for the Crema Catalan from there).
