  1. Looking at purchasing a Trek Road bike either a 15000/ 1500d or a
triple gear bike. Anydody tell me whether it worth getting the triple
gear bike. Or any relevant info on these- or if they know whether I can
get a better price than Evans cycles ?

  2. [email hidden] came up with the following;:

On a road bike I'd personally prefer the double, unless I were perhaps
riding round the Lake District or other steep hilly areas a lot.

Apart from weight, any reason not to have one?

If you are using it only for riding fast around the SE a double should be
    fine..

If you are using it for something like commuting where you might be tired
and unable to power up the hills I would get a triple, so as to put less
    strain on your knees.

The incremental weight of the triple is minimal so why not have it just
    in case?

Personally my road bikes are doubles, but this is only because I'm an
aesthete and think triples look cluttered and ugly. In practice, unless
you're a serious athlete, a triple will make hills a good deal easier.
If the aesthetics of triples doesn't bother you then I can think of no
good reason not to have one - the additional weight is trivial.

Just bought one of these from Evans myself.

I had a good look around before buying and could only find one place
selling them cheaper but these turned out to 2004s - with 9 speed
    Ultegra.

I went for the triple on the basis that the weight difference is
minimal and its better to have it and not use it, than to need it and
    not have it.

Bearing in mind my old road bike is a late 80's Raleigh 531 with
Shimano 600 kit, this bike is a revelation to me. I certainly go
significantly faster but I haven't had the chance to test the comfort
    on a long ride yet.

Also Evans service was very good - got the bike built for me in about
an hour while I waited and knocked ukp50 off a new set of pedals and
shoes. this was at the Castleford branch.

Can't answer that without knowing lots about your power and cadence and
the gradients you ride up, and even then it's a difficult question.
Double will be fine is you are fit & strong & competitive enough. But
you're less likey to regret getting a triple if you did make a mistake
than the other way around. It's more miserable to be overgeared than to
have more gears than you need!

Expense and fashion. The weight difference is small and the other reasons
are minor too: q factor and stiffness is better with a double, but most
users won't notice or care about that. You could say front shifting is
easier with a double, but not so much front shifting is required when you
have a triple anyway. Double users also often claim their chainline is
better, but again the chainline from a triple's middle ring is good (and
enables more use of the smaller rear sprockets than what are useable from
    a double inner).

The half way soloution is a "compact double". These are becoming more and
    more popular.

As you're asking the question the answer is almost certainly yes. That's
not meant to be an insult; rather the people for whom the double is the
better buy will be already be competitive roadies and will definitely
know they don't require a triple.

Trek make very good bikes right across the range so you're unlikely to
get a bad bike as long as it's properly fitted. Evans are not the
cheapest shop in Britain, but they do have knowledgeable staff and
provide good service, which should include fitting for a new bike. You
    pays your money...

I used to ride in the south east. The surrey hills on 52/42x13/18. My
    knees have never forgiven me.
Now the same bike has a compact double (48/34x13/19-25 depending on
    mood).

I don't find I need anything more than that on the hills round here
    unladen.

Triple or compact double. If it is a new bike anyway, get the triple.
You can always take the inner ring off if you don't want it.
