A feller named Tudor Bompa advocates an approach that incorporates different phases of training - hypertrophy, strength, conversion to power, lather, rinse, repeat. Depending on how you want to use your power (shot put, slapshot, etc) would dictate the best way to structure your program.

I think he's right.
Hypertrophy and hyperplasia add muscle mass, increasing potential strength.
Strength training takes advantage of the increased potential.
Power training takes advantage of the added strength by training it to be released in a momentary burst.
There's a lot of timing involved in applying power to other objects, though. Timing the motions of your body to bring all of the energy to a peak at one point to maximize the energy in a punch or a thrown/hit ball, for instance.
